Quest Software Offers Free Utility to Recover Deleted Objects in Microsoft Active Directory

Business Wire, July 12, 2004

IRVINE, Calif. -- Quest Object Restore for Active Directory Provides Graphical Interface to View and Reanimate Deleted Items

Quest Software Inc. (Nasdaq:QSFT), a leading provider of application, database and Windows management solutions, now offers at no charge a graphical utility that helps Microsoft Active Directory administrators recover deleted objects using the Tombstone Reanimation feature of Windows Server 2003. This Microsoft recovery interface allows administrators to restore accidentally deleted objects online, without rebooting a domain controller. Quest Object Restore for Active Directory enhances this ability by providing a graphical interface, similar to the Windows Recycle Bin, for viewing and restoring Active Directory objects.

"The ability to restore deleted objects in Active Directory is one of many exciting new features provided with Windows Server 2003 that offer greater administrative flexibility and reduced total cost of ownership," said Jackson Shaw, product manager at Microsoft. "We're happy to see partners such as Quest Software build on that functionality to further benefit our customers. The ability to quickly recover objects in Active Directory is important to achieve uninterrupted access to business-critical directory and authentication services."

Perry Canning, senior technical analyst at Allianz Canada, a leading Canadian property and casualty insurer, appreciates the value of Object Restore for Active Directory. "We have put a great deal of effort into ensuring that our Active Directory is well managed and secure, and we've learned first-hand how time-consuming it can be to manually restore deleted objects," Canning said. "We are familiar with Quest's products and appreciate how simple they are to install and use. Object Restore for Active Directory will save us countless hours and help us meet the business need for continuous system availability."

In addition to this free utility, Quest Software offers a full-featured recovery product called Recovery Manager for Active Directory that provides complete recovery of Active Directory and Group Policy objects, including back-linked attributes. Both recovery products are part of Quest Software's comprehensive suite of products for managing Active Directory. Features of the free utility and the full-featured product are complementary. For example:

--Using Object Restore, administrators can recover an object, and using Recovery Manager, all the object's attributes are also recovered.

--Object Restore can recover a deleted user account, and Recovery Manager can also restore all group memberships for that account.

--Using Recovery Manager, administrators have access to comparison reports detailing all changes that have occurred to Active Directory objects and attributes.

--Using Recovery Manager, changes to an object can be rolled back to an earlier point in time, allowing fast recovery from erroneous directory changes.

--Using Recovery Manager, Group Policy objects can be restored from a backup, allowing quick rollback of unwanted changes, which could affect the productivity of many users.
