`Industrial Biotechnology' Journal to Be Launched by Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., and Genetic Engineering News
Business Wire, July 14, 2004
LARCHMONT, N.Y. -- Industrial Biotechnology, a new journal, will be published in 2005 by Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., (www.liebertpub.com), in association with Genetic Engineering News (GEN) (www.genengnews.com). The only publication dedicated to this important field, Industrial Biotechnology will be the premier forum for the development of new tools and applications of biotechnology for industrial applications that include food processing, textiles, alternative energy sources, and improving the environmental sustainability of manufacturing applications.
Heralded as the next wave of biotechnology, industrial biotechnology--with its promise to deliver novel biodegradable products and consumer goods produced cheaper and with environmentally friendly processes--is drawing attention from such critical funding bodies as the Department of Energy and the Department of Defense. For biotechnology companies, industrial biotechnology represents a significant opportunity to make inroads into new markets beyond pharmaceuticals and agriculture.
"Developments in energy production, for example, will be enhanced with the establishment of biofuels, in which non-petroleum fuels based on agricultural waste are converted into usable energy," explains John Sterling, editor in chief of Genetic Engineering News. "Pharmaceuticals and other chemicals whose manufacturing currently involves costly, environmentally harmful processes will be manufactured instead with sustainable methods that harness agricultural and energy waste. Novel products such as bio-based plastics and fibers will also revolutionize possibilities for biodefense and consumer goods."
"Genetic Engineering News, which was the first biotechnology industry magazine, launched in 1981, is the most widely read biotechnology publication in the world," said Mary Ann Liebert, president and CEO of the company, which will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2005. "Industrial Biotechnology delineates a segment of biotechnology that has enormous promise for the future, and this journal will have a major role as a catalyst. The authoritative, interdisciplinary, international editorial board of Industrial Biotechnology will deliver rigor and expert presentation of those research results and scientific developments that stand to best advance this emerging field."
"Financial analysts estimate that industrial biotechnology could be a $100 billion business by 2010," says John Sterling. "This field is already exploiting novel bioprocess methods and technologies such as genomics and proteomics which, to date, have been almost exclusively utilized by pharma biotech."
Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., is a privately held, fully integrated media company known for developing authoritative peer-reviewed journals in cutting edge areas of biomedical research, law, engineering, and business. Genetic Engineering News (www.genengnews.com), published by Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., is published 21 times a year, the only high-frequency publication focused on international bioindustry news.
