L-3 Communications Enhances Checkpoint Technology at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport; Pilot Program Increases Baggage Throughput, Allows Faster Passenger Screening

FARNBOROUGH, England -- L-3 Communications (NYSE:LLL) announced today that its Security and Detection Systems division was recently selected by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to conduct a 60-day pilot program that is now underway at Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD). The pilot program, which began in early June, is evaluating means of enhancing the airport's checkpoint screening equipment to increase baggage throughput and allow for faster passenger screening. TSA officials determined the pilot program was needed to explore alternatives that could help alleviate congestion during peak passenger travel periods.
L-3 Security and Detection Systems modified the high-speed roller tables of 14 L-3 Linescan 110 TIP Ready X-ray (TRX) systems to allow passengers whose bags have been viewed and cleared the opportunity to retrieve their baggage more quickly. Operators can now stop the conveyor belt to view bags that require further inspection without holding up bags already scanned and cleared ahead of the suspect bag. The simple time delay modification requires minimal manpower or investment to install; and could be easily deployed to existing systems Nationwide within months.
