Business Wire, July 9, 2004

YORK, Pa. -- Voith Siemens Hydro Power Generation has been awarded a $30 million contract for the supply of hydro power generators to the Shuibuya hydroelectric project in Hubei Province, China.

E. Mark Garner, P.E., Voith Siemens president of North American operations in York, Pa., said the agreement was reached in December 2003 between Voith Siemens' Shanghai branch and the Hubei Shuibuya Construction Company.

Under the terms of the contract, Garner said, Voith Siemens will supply mechanical equipment and design services for four Francis-type turbines that will provide an output of 450 megawatts each. The first unit of the plant, located on the Qingjiang River, a major tributary of the Yangtze, is planned to become operational in 2007. The full project is slated for completion in 2009.

The Shuibuya hydro power plant will help to regulate water peaks on the Yangtze during the summer flood season and at the same time balance peak power demand in central China's power grid.

Voith sets standards in paper technology, power transmission engineering, power generation and industrial services. Established in 1867, it has a workforce of approximately 24,000, sales of EUR 3.1 billion and over 180 locations worldwide. It is one of the largest family-owned enterprises in Europe.
