PivX to US-CERT: Don't Abandon Internet Explorer
Business Wire, July 9, 2004
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. -- PivX Solutions Inc. (OTCBB:PIVX), is advising US-CERT that its recommendation for Internet users to stop using Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) merely avoids the current browser security problems, without addressing the need for a long-term solution. PivX is a market leader in the development of Proactive Threat Mitigation(TM) solutions for the enterprise security market.
In a letter to Amit Yoran, director, National Cyber Security Division, Department of Homeland Security, PivX CEO Rob Shively and Senior Security Researcher Thor Laholm, warn that using Web browsers other than IE, such as Mozilla, may reduce exposure to these vulnerabilities, but they cannot eliminate exposure because IE is still present as an integral part of Windows.
"US-CERT's advice to Internet users to find another browser rather than use IE may stop those users from experiencing many security problems, but this will not be 100% efficient and does nothing to find a solution to the fundamental problems that are inherent with using Internet Explorer," said Rob Shively, CEO at PivX.
"The whole security industry must think more creatively in terms of the strategy when dealing with this type of problem. We cannot just drop products because they have a fault. We have yet to develop an Internet browser which is completely secure, so even if users choose another browser, we cannot predict what vulnerabilities these alternative browsers will suffer in six months' time," added Shively.
PivX is proposing to US-CERT a security strategy based upon Host-based Intrusion Prevention. To see a full copy of the letter, please go to http://www.pivx.com/news/CERTletter.
