TOKYO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 11, 2004
Internet Initiative Japan Inc. (IIJ, NASDAQ: IIJIE)
-- 12Gbps Broadband Access Environment to Support Downloads for
over 300,000 Users
-- High-Volume Web Server Praised by Numerous Game and Content
Distributors Now Even Easier to Use
Internet Initiative Japan Inc. (IIJ, NASDAQ: IIJIE), one of Japan's leading Internet access and comprehensive network solutions providers, today announced that it will be providing the download environment for the commercial release of the online game "Lineage II(1)," to be released by NC Japan K.K. on June 25, 2004.
Massively popular online games get a concentrated volume of traffic immediately after their release as users download the software that is needed to play the game. More than 300,000 users are expected to download the 1.3GB game which translates into more than 390TB worth of downloads. Providing an environment that can handle such an enormous number of downloads in a very short time is vital to the success of online games. With the 12Gbps broadband environment and IIJ's high performance dedicated hosting service "IIJ Download Site Service(2)", the more than 300,000 users expected for "Lineage II" will have a trouble-free downloading experience.
IIJ also provided the download environment for the 11 February 2004 release of "Lineage II Open Beta Test," which performed reliably and smoothly for the 110,000 thousand user registrations and the 20,000 simultaneous connections that flooded the system on the first day. The number of hits for the commercial release is expected to greatly exceed those numbers, which is why IIJ's operational and technological skills and equipment, and the scalability of IIJ's service caught the eye of NC Japan, who chose the IIJ Download Site Service for its ability to deliver during the vitally important initial peak-access period.
IIJ continues to provide the best, strongest, and fastest hosting environment in the broadband era.
(1) "Lineage II" is an online role-playing game (RPG) for the computer that continues the adventures started in "Lineage." It is a 3D RPG designed with the advanced technology of NCsoft. The beautifully rendered scenes of this world were developed using the latest 3D graphic technology to provide the thousands of players with a live-action game world in real-time over the Internet. "Lineage II" was commercially released in South Korea in October 2003, and with more than 200,000 users, it continues to attract new players at a record pace. The open beta test used 6 servers, and there are now 28 servers supporting the game.
(2) IIJ Download Site Service is the only gigabyte-class broadband dedicated download hosting service, and it has received rave reviews from its many customers. A dedicated server for each customer is installed in the Network Operation Center (NOC) and connected to IIJ's high-speed backbone, while customers connect to the server through a guaranteed-bandwidth line. This provides a higher quality of service and reliability than shared hosting services, and is ideal for constructing a download site.
