Canoga Perkins Unveils DWDM Optical Networking Platform
Business Wire, June 21, 2004
CHATSWORTH, Calif. -- Canoga Perkins, a leading provider of Optical Ethernet service delivery equipment and CWDM/DWDM transport systems, today announced a cost effective and easy to install carrier class optical networking platform that dramatically reduces fiber consumption and capital spending.
The new Canoga Perkins optical networking platform is designed to be very appealing to Cable System Operators that have become Cable Service Providers, campus Enterprise locations, the Military and Incumbent Telcos and Independent Carriers. The optical networking platform, configured as a DWDM transport system, has an excellent value proposition. It is a high bandwidth product that can increase network capacity up to 16 times while reducing capital expenditures.
The new OC-48c capable DWDM transport system is available in 8 and 16 channels and can substantially reduce fiber consumption in metro, campus and enterprise networks by enabling the rapid deployment of up to 16 unique optical wavelengths on one optical fiber pair. Canoga's DWDM transport technology enables Network Managers to meet the demands of present and planned services. High bandwidth services can be quickly and easily deployed over existing networks without the high cost of fiber upgrades or new fiber installations. With the average national cost of laying fiber now topping $3,500 per mile, Canoga's new DWDM optical platform is quite cost effective and offers a very short payback period.
The Canoga Perkins DWDM optical networking platform is made up of multiple technology modules that are housed in the UCS 1000 Universal Chassis System. The UCS 1000 is a multi-technology platform that has earned NEBS Level 3 certification, can contain different technologies simultaneously, has hot swappable modules, provides SNMP network management and can be ordered with hot swappable redundant AC or DC power supplies.
The modules that make up the new optical networking platform include DWDM Transponders that provide high output power from within the Universal Chassis System for extended reach applications and can overcome passive losses. The rate agile Digital Transponders convert standard optical communications wavelengths carrying digital signals from 100 Mbps to 2.5 Gbps. The signals are then fed to 200 GHz spaced ITU standard Mux/Demuxes to be transmitted over a pair of single mode optical fibers up to 80 km.
Other UCS 1000 technology modules convert Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, 1 Gbps and 2 Gbps Fibre Channel, ESCON, 1 Gbps and 2 Gbps FICON, OC-3c, OC-12c and OC-48c signals in the node to a DWDM carrier on any of the 16 available wavelengths. This feature allows multiple LANs or LAN segments to share a common path fiber, which is a cost effective strategy for Hybrid Fiber Coax (HFC) networks to push fiber optic technology deeper into the network. This is especially beneficial to Cable Service Providers that are updating their networks to handle the sophisticated services business requires today.
Jack Buhn, Canoga Perkins President and CEO, stated, "Cable Service Providers, Incumbent Telcos and Independent Carriers can offer new, profitable services, increase their capacities, expand their virtual cable plant and still keep expenses low. Service Providers are developing a keen interest in managed optical Ethernet service delivery and metro area WDM transport. It is our mission to be their supplier of choice for these fiber optic systems."
