Expanded Linux Offerings Increase Customer Choice and
Flexibility Across the Datacenter
VERITAS Software Corporation (Nasdaq:VRTSE) today announced it has extended support of its industry-leading storage management and clustering products to the Intel(R) Itanium(R) 2 processor-based platform on Red Hat Linux 3.0. With the availability of VERITAS Foundation Suite(TM) 2.2 and VERITAS Cluster Server 2.2 on Itanium architecture for Linux, VERITAS is increasing its commitment to making Linux enterprise-ready and extending its broad Linux platform support to both IA-32 and Itanium-based architectures. VERITAS OpForce(TM) software was the first VERITAS product to support Itanium architecture on Linux.
With a building block approach toward enabling utility computing, VERITAS continues to address customers' evolving needs through the delivery of integrated software solutions that are designed to align IT with business needs. By extending enterprise-class file system, volume management and clustering solutions to Itanium-based platforms on Linux, customers can embrace the cost advantages of Intel and Linux and enhance the manageability and availability of their Itanium-based environments. According to market intelligence firm IDC, the market for Itanium-based servers shipped with Linux is forecasted to grow to $2 billion by 2008.
"Intel is pleased that VERITAS is extending support of its storage management and clustering products for Linux on Intel Itanium 2-based platforms," said Richard Wirt, senior Intel fellow and general manager of the Intel software and solutions group. "We're committed to working with VERITAS to provide customers with enterprise solutions for deployment in Linux server environments running mission-critical applications."
"As Linux is increasingly seen as a platform for important enterprise applications, scalability, reliability and availability of the platform increase in importance as well," said Dan Kusnetzky, IDC's vice president of system software research. "VERITAS, long known for its clustering, availability and virtual storage software, is following through on its public commitment to extend its storage management and high availability product portfolio to support Intel Itanium-based platforms on Linux. Organizations can evaluate Linux for Itanium-based platforms knowing that their requirements for scalability, reliability and availability can be satisfied."
Benefits of deploying VERITAS software on Itanium architecture in Linux environments include:
-- Manageability and Availability: VERITAS software on Itanium
architecture helps reduce the risks and complexity associated
with transitioning Linux into deployments with more
high-profile enterprise requirements. VERITAS Cluster Server
combined with VERITAS Foundation Suite software brings proven
enterprise-class storage management and high availability to
Linux deployments with demanding service levels.
-- Cost Savings: Customers can take advantage of the potential
cost saving of Linux in Intel Itanium-based environments
without compromising enterprise-level management
functionality.
-- Ease of Management: Linux administrators can use online,
automated tools that greatly simplify the management of
storage, clustering and servers across both 32-bit and 64-bit
environments with a single user interface.
"Customers looking to run enterprise workloads on Linux have been asking leading ISVs like VERITAS to bring support to the Itanium architecture on Linux," said Mark Bregman, executive vice president of product operations at VERITAS Software. "VERITAS is excited to be working with Intel to deliver this to our customers with our enterprise-proven solution set of storage management and high availability software products."
"As a leading supplier for Linux on standards-based servers, HP is delighted that this critical VERITAS technology is now available for our Integrity server customers running Linux," said Don Jenkins, vice president of product marketing for business critical servers, Hewlett-Packard. "With this new announcement, HP plans to work even more closely with VERITAS to extend our joint solutions on Integrity servers to support Windows, HP-UX, and Linux operating systems."

VERITAS Foundation Suite 2.2 for Linux is available immediately with prices starting at $1,500 USD. VERITAS Cluster Server 2.2 is available immediately with prices starting at $1,995 USD.
