AVON, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 1, 2004

The most stylish couples at 2004 high school proms may not be sporting the hottest color trends or brilliant accessories, but they will be decked out in something that can be purchased at the local hardware store - duct tape. And, for one lucky pair, attending prom clad in stylish duct tape duds will prove very profitable.

By designing and dressing in fashions made of duct tape, couples will be eligible to participate in the fourth annual Duck(R) brand duct tape Stuck at Prom(R) Scholarship Contest. With the chance to win $2,500 each for college, a little creativity and a lot of tape will go a long way for one lucky pair.

Forget silk and satin. Using duct tape as the primary material for formalwear will not only relax the strain on budgets, it will allow students to be inventive and original with their duct tape prom fashions. From the newest hues of maroon and purple to the traditional colors of silver and black, Duck(R) brand duct tape is available in more than 18 colors and patterns. Instead of buying a pre-made dress and tux, a couple can customize their own stylish duct tape duds to look exactly how they want.

WHAT

Sponsored by Henkel Consumer Adhesives, Inc., the Duck(R) brand duct tape Stuck at Prom(R) Scholarship Contest will award students for their creativity and originality in creating or accessorizing prom formalwear with duct tape. The first place winners will receive a $2,500 college scholarship each--a total of $5,000 for the couple--and $2,500 for the high school hosting the prom. The second place winners will each receive a $1,000 college scholarship, with the high school receiving $1,000. The third place couple will each win a $500 college scholarship, and the high school will receive $500. In addition, three Top of the Tape Award winners will receive $500 each.

HOW TO ENTER

Interested students can go to www.ducktapeclub.com for official contest rules and a registration form. The contest starts on March 1, 2004. Contest participants are required to submit a completed entry form and a photo of themselves wearing their duct tape prom formalwear. Photos and entries must be received by June 11, 2004.

WINNER SELECTION

During the contest period, all entries, including entries from the previous years, can be viewed at www.ducktapeclub.com. Entries are posted in the order they are received.

First, second and third place winners will be chosen by a panel of judges including Jim & Tim, the famed Duct Tape Guys, and Todd Scott, duct tape guru and sculptor. Winners will be judged on a number of criteria, including workmanship, originality, creative use of accessories and quantity of duct tape used.

In addition, three Top of the Tape Award winners will be selected based on online voting. Entries will be grouped into one of the three Attire Categories: Traditional Prom Attire; Theme/Costume Attire; and Just Plain Silver Attire. The couple receiving the highest number of votes in each category will receive the Top of the Tape Award.

Winners will be announced on or around July 7, 2004.

2003 WINNERS

In 2003, 339 couples from 49 states and Canada participated in the Stuck at Prom(R) Scholarship Contest. The winners, Margaret (Meg) Roberts, 16, and Tyler Mickley, 17, attended the West Point High School prom in West Point, Virginia, decked out in duds made from 540 feet of duct tape.

Alone, each outfit had its own red, black and yellow starburst effect. But, when standing next to each other, Roberts and Mickley's outfits visually fused together and created one very large starburst effect. Roberts designed her white gown with the left half of the starburst, while Mickley sported a red duct tape shirt, yellow vest and bowtie, and the right half of the starburst. The couple completed their look with Mickley's Elvis-style duct tape hair and Roberts' matching duct tape highlights and accessories. In all, it took the couple 50 hours to complete the outfits.

Mickley said reactions from students and teachers at the prom were consistent. "Everyone asked if it was really duct tape - most didn't know it came in so many colors," said Mickley. "We didn't expect to win the contest because there was so much competition and so many unique and colorful outfits," added Roberts.

Duck(R) brand duct tape is available nationally at retailers such as Ace Hardware, TrueValue, Lowe's and Wal-Mart. Duck brand duct tape is available in more than 18 colors and patterns, including camouflage, fluorescent green, pink, orange and yellow, standard silver, and an assortment of other solid colors such as red, yellow, black and blue.
