Capitol Records will release "Dino: The Essential Dean Martin" on June 1, 2004. Dean Martin's music personified happiness and put a smile on everyone's face. Dino brings together 30 of Martin's chart-topping hits and signature songs for the first time, from both his Capitol Records (1949-1961) and Reprise Records (1960-1969) repertoire. Included is the #1 single "Everybody Loves Somebody," the song that knocked the Beatles' "A Hard Day's Night" from the top in August 1964.
For Dean Martin (1917-1995), singing was one of the most effortless tasks ever asked of him. His voice was subtle and warm, a baritone crooner with a slight Italian enunciation that made lyrics dance from breath to word, as gracefully as Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers across the parquetry. The casualness of his performance was his strength. He always appeared to be having a good time and transferred that emotion to the music.
Martin began singing professionally in the ballrooms throughout Ohio in the 1940s. He performed in the supper clubs and cabarets of New York City during World War II. He signed to Capitol Records when he and Jerry Lewis, known together as the comedic duo Martin & Lewis, stormed Hollywood in 1949. His meteoric rise to fame made him a big-screen draw and landed him acclaimed acting roles alongside John Wayne and Marlon Brando. At his passing Martin was acknowledged as one of greatest entertainers of the 20th century for his decades of hit films, TV shows and songs.
The glaring spotlight of Dean's television celebrity has drawn some focus away from his recordings. With the release of "Dino: The Essential Dean Martin," his songs are presented in a collection that allows for an uncluttered analysis and appreciation of a genuine entertainer and gifted vocalist.
