ENDESA Reported 225 Energy Efficiency and Gas Reduction Projects in Spain to the Energy Wisdom Programme

203.000 MWh in energy consumption have been saved.
-- ENDESA reported 187 electric generation projects and 38 in
electricity transmission and distribution.
ENDESA (NYSE:ELE) reported to the Energy Wisdom Programme (EWP) 225 documented energy efficiency and greenhouse gas reduction projects in Spain between 1990 and 2002.
These projects contributed to improve energy efficiency by saving fuel and energy consumption and have also prevented or reduced greenhouse gas emissions. ENDESA's efforts involved a reduction of CO2 emissions by more than 15 million tons. ENDESA reported electric generation and electricity transmission and distribution projects.
1. Electric Generation
The company displayed 3 energy efficiency improvement projects that involved the transformation of four groups of 350 MW (in order to burn domestic and imported coal in As Pontes coal-fired power plant), equipment replacement in Teruel's power plant, and new cleaning and strainer systems in Garona's nuclear power plant. ENDESA also reported the development of 5 fuel switching projects, four will use natural gas, while the other will burn low sulphur coal.
ENDESA also reported 97 renewable power generation projects, 56 wind energy projects, 35 hydroelectric projects and 6 biomass projects.
In addition to these projects there are 4 new nuclear generation projects, adding 418 MW, and 78 cogeneration projects, which contributed to reach 580 MW in total cogeneration capacity.
ENDESA opened 8 wind farms in 2003, investing more than EUR 167 millions to add 186 MW. The company is currently building 13 new wind farms and a minihydro power plant that will add a total of 200 MW by the end of 2004.
2. Electricity transmission and distribution
ENDESA reported 38 projects saving 203.000 MWh in energy consumption, 8 projects concerning the building of new transmission and distribution lines, 15 high efficiency transformer installation projects, 1 cable replacement project, 1 project concerning an increase in transmission and distribution lines voltage and 13 projects related to transmission and distribution activities.
Energy Wisdom Programme
Energy Wisdom Programme, is a voluntary electricity industry initiative on sustainable development launched by EURELECTRIC in the year 2000. It provides a platform upon which electricity companies are able to demonstrate their proactive approach towards sustainable energy production, delivery and use. Their main objectives are to achieve measurable improvements in energy efficiency and reductions in greenhouse gas emissions in a cost-effective way.
EWP considers the following categories: electricity generation, electricity transmission and distribution, end-use energy efficiency, carbon sinks and other.
ENDESA joined this initiative due to the importance they give to environmental protection, sustainable development and transparency, and because this initiative gives the company an opportunity to show their commitments and efforts to contribute to a sustainable energy development.
