Research and Markets: ICICI Bank, France Telecom and Experian Marketing Services Recognised for Developing World's Largest and Most Intensively Used Databases

Business Wire, Nov 23, 2004

DUBLIN, Ireland -- Research and Markets has announced the addition of Practices at the Frontiers of Database Scalability to their offering.

Practices at the Frontiers of Database Scalability presents findings from a recent survey, which examined the world's leading databases, providing authoritative and independent data on the world's largest and most intensively used databases. This survey identifies the known boundaries of database scalability, presents the database environments that support the implementations and pays tribute to the user organizations that have built and are managing these leading data resources.

Program participants completed a brief online questionnaire on key metrics and operating environment. Eligibility requirements for the 2003 program stated that databases had to be in production and contain a minimum of 500 GB of data (not disk space) for Windows systems and one TB for all other operating environments. This survey was launched in May 2003 and surveys were collected until the end of September, a five-month period. The web-based questionnaire took about 15 minutes to complete. Surveys were received from organizations in a wide range of industries and represent all leading database management systems, server platforms and storage solutions.

Practices at the Frontiers of Database Scalability covers the following topics:

--Demographics

--Database and Server Architecture

--Hardware and Operating System

--DBMS

--Projected Size and Workload

TopTen Program respondents' projections for multiple terabyte growth plus the rapidly changing technological landscape guarantee formidable challenges for database practitioners. This report reveals where the frontiers of database scalability lie and the computing environments that are meeting the most demanding requirements.

The largest reported online transaction processing database (OLTP) in the 2003 survey, 18.3 TB of data, was nearly double the size of the 2001 OLTP leader. On the decision support side, the 2003 data warehouse leader tipped the scales at 29.2 TB, virtually a three-fold increase over the last two years. Also, system workloads rose approximately 50% increase over the 2001 figures:

--Operational systems reached 3,223 transactions per second (tps)

--Decision support systems (DSS) completed 224 concurrent in-flight queries.

This report is designed to guide database practitioners through strategic and implementation decisions and to help them maximize their investment in data management solutions. Typical buyers hold titles such as CIO, Strategic Planning Executive/Consultant, IT Architect/Director and DW Architect/Director/Product Manager.
