Digital River Offers Verified by Visa to Support Increased Security for Online Purchasing

Business Wire, Nov 23, 2004

MINNEAPOLIS -- Digital River, Inc. (NASDAQ:DRIV), a global leader in e-commerce outsourcing, today announced that its e-commerce platform is enabled to support Verified by Visa(R), one of the leading anti-fraud technologies on the Internet. Digital River is adding Visa's proven authentication technology to its existing multi-level fraud prevention program as part of its ongoing effort to create increased security and confidence in online purchasing. Thousands of online merchants with Digital River hosted sites can now use Verified by Visa to help verify cardholder identity, prevent the unauthorized use of credit and debit cards online, and minimize payment card losses.

"As an e-commerce outsourcer, we build and manage online businesses for more than 40,000 clients," said Marty Boos, chief information officer at Digital River. "Clients depend on us to offer reliable and secure e-commerce systems. By working with industry leaders such as Visa to offer enhanced security tools, we believe we can not only create added fraud protection for online merchants and their customers, but also increase confidence in Internet shopping."

Online merchants can add Verified by Visa to the checkout process on their Digital River hosted e-commerce site. Cardholders that have activated the Verified by Visa service on their existing Visa payment cards will be prompted to enter a secret password each time a purchase is made - similar to the use of a PIN number at an ATM machine.

"Security and confidence are vital to the continued growth of online commerce, and Visa is committed to helping secure the e-commerce channel," said Jim McCarthy, senior vice president of emerging technology at Visa USA. "As an important line of defense for Internet merchants, Verified by Visa helps drive volume by giving customers more confidence in making purchases online, and by reducing merchants' costs by helping to manage risk at the point of transaction."

About Verified by Visa

Verified by Visa is the leading standard for the safe and confidential authentication of Internet transactions using cardholder-selected passwords. This makes it far more difficult for criminals or other unauthorized users to make a transaction with a stolen card number. Cardholders can activate their Visa payment cards for the Verified by Visa service through their financial institution, at the Verified by Visa Web site (http://www.visa.com/verified), or when making a purchase at a participating merchant. Cardholders who have activated their Verified by Visa cards can authenticate their identity when shopping on the Internet at a participating merchant through the use of a password - the same way a PIN number authenticates cardholder identity at an ATM machine. More than 250 million Visa payment cards in the U.S. are eligible for Verified by Visa activation today.
