Increased Net Security Threats Spur Sales of Intrusion Prevention System Products Reports In-Stat/MDR
Business Wire, Nov 29, 2004
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Worms, viruses, and denial-of-service attacks continue to plague Internet users, and businesses will continue to protect themselves by buying new network Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) products, according to In-Stat/MDR (http://www.instat.com). As a result, the combined market for IPS and Intrusion Detection System (IDS) equipment is poised to reach $1.4 billion by 2008, up from $541 million in 2003, the high-tech research firm said. Most of the revenue growth will be through hardware-based network IPS appliances.
"IPS is a proactive technology that can block attacks before they reach the intended target," said In-Stat/MDR analyst Victoria Fodale. "Besides protecting the network from undesired access, next-generation IPS products also safeguard the network from malicious content and the inappropriate traffic rates that precede worm or denial-of-service attacks."
A recent report from In-Stat/MDR, which includes a proprietary user survey, also found:
--80% of organizations now use IPS products inline with blocking protection.
--19% of IPS products are deployed at critical segments within the network.
--The top three factors that influence purchasing decisions are: increased functionality, business liability and improved network performance.
The report, "Intrusion Prevention Systems: Will Standalone Products Survive?" (#IN0401360LN), examines the IDS/IPS product segment, with a focus on the network IPS products, including five-year forecasts for network IDS/IPS appliances, network IDS/IPS software, and host IDS/IPS products.
