Lucent Technologies Awarded for Leadership in Next-Generation Messaging Business Development Strategy by Frost and Sullivan

Business Wire, Nov 9, 2004

MURRAY HILL, N.J. -- In its recently released study, "Strategic Analysis of the Enhanced Carrier Messaging Platforms Market (worldwide 2002-2007)," Frost & Sullivan has honored Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) with the 2004 Business Development Strategy Leadership Award.

The Frost & Sullivan Award for Business Development Strategy Leadership is presented each year to the company that has demonstrated excellence in business development within the industry. The award recognizes the company's ability to best perceive consumer needs, develop products and/or services that meet consumer needs, successfully introduce products or services to the industry, and identify new market segments to expand the existing customer base. Lucent was cited for upgrading its installed base of messaging platforms, and capturing new accounts with its next-generation platform, the AnyPath(R) Messaging System, part of Lucent's Accelerate(TM) Next-Generation Communications Solutions portfolio.

"Through a combination of vision, technology and successful marketing, Lucent was able to grow its market share," said Frost & Sullivan Senior Strategic Analyst Ronald Gruia. "The company was able to capture AnyPath wins in key markets outside the US, including Canada (Bell Canada) and Ireland (Eircom)."

Lucent, the leading messaging vendor in North America (number two worldwide) also has recently announced contracts for AnyPath systems with operators in the United States (Verizon Wireless, ALLTEL and MetroPCS) and Ecuador (Andinatel).

As testimony of its success of its next-gen solution, in August 2003, Lucent announced more than 8 million global subscribers were already on AnyPath, a 16-fold increase from the fall of the previous year, Frost & Sullivan added. Since that announcement, Lucent has increased the number of AnyPath subscribers to more than 21 million.

"We're extremely honored to have received this award," said J. J. Lhospital, vice president, product management and CTO of Lucent's Application Solutions Group. "This award reflects the major advances Lucent has made in the development of its messaging portfolio, and the increasing success we're seeing with customers."

"The vendor has certainly showcased its sound business development skills, in identifying and positioning a new solution with significant revenue upside that is also an integral part of its Accelerate(TM) portfolio," Gruia added.

The AnyPath End User Applications portfolio, part of Lucent's Accelerate(TM) solutions offering, is designed to enable service providers to offer exciting new multimedia messaging services to subscribers across mobile and wireline networks. The AnyPath portfolio consists of applications that support voice and web messaging, content delivery, multimedia messaging and unified communications. These applications are highly scaleable and reliable, and can be deployed independently or as a total solution to address operators' unique needs.
