NYTimes.com Relaunches Technology Section with CNET Product Reviews and David Pogue Video Reviews

Business Wire, Oct 15, 2004

NEW YORK -- NYTimes.com announced today the relaunch of its technology section at www.nytimes.com/technology with product reviews, articles and features from CNET and exclusive columns and video reviews from David Pogue, The Times's technology columnist. The section also provides enhanced search capabilities so readers can quickly research products by price, type or manufacturer to find the best ratings and deals.

Each week, the section will showcase a one- to two-minute video, filmed and narrated by Mr. Pogue, with additional commentary and product demos. Mr. Pogue will also write daily posts on emerging technology trends, new products, reader mail, anecdotes and noteworthy links, an online-only feature that will begin later this month.

"Our new technology section, featuring The Times's high-quality journalism and video and CNET's comprehensive reviews, will be the definitive online resource for technology news and information," said Catherine Levene, vice president of product, business development and strategy for New York Times Digital. "Technology has become an integral aspect of consumers' everyday lives, and whether our readers are looking for information about digital cameras or DVRs, they can find it here."

NYTimes.com/technology features a new horizontal navigation structure with five areas:

--Technology section front - Times columns including "Game Theory," "Patents," "State of the Art" and "Online Shopper" as well as tech news from The Times, CNET, Reuters and the Associated Press

--Circuits - the weekly section of The New York Times with comprehensive coverage of technology trends

--Product Reviews - guides from The Times and CNET for camcorders, cameras, cellphones, computers, handhelds, home video, music, peripherals and Wi-Fi

--How To's - Q&As, "How it Works" articles and multimedia from The Times, "How-To's" columns from CNET, and "What to look for when buying" tips for each product category

--Deals - daily clearance deals and best value recommendations from CNET.

Readers can now access and browse the complete, free archive of Circuits articles dating back to 1998. Also available are special sections including "Wireless Living," a look at how wireless gadgets are spreading through American homes and businesses, and "The Blogosphere," a collection of essays and articles about the world of online journals known as Web logs or blogs.

The redesigned section provides highly targeted, product-focused opportunities for advertisers. Personal technology advertisers have the ability to target offers through placement against relevant content with banner ads, contextual commerce ads and sponsorships. The section also features new fixed advertising positions such as the Featured Product area, which appears on each page. Additionally, the weekly Circuits e-mail written by Mr. Pogue exclusively for NYTimes.com currently has nearly 250,000 subscribers.
