SigmaTel-Based Digital Music Players to Support Microsoft Windows Media Digital Rights Management -DRM- 10
Business Wire, Oct 15, 2004
AUSTIN, Texas -- SigmaTel, Inc. (NASDAQ:SGTL), the market leader for digital audio controller chips within portable music players, today announced that Microsoft Corp.'s Windows Media Digital Rights Management (DRM) 10 will be supported by the STMP35xx product family. Driver updates will be available in January for consumers wishing to upgrade their STMP35xx-based digital audio player to accept Windows Media DRM 10.
The latest version of Windows Media DRM is a flexible platform that makes it possible to protect and securely deliver a la carte and subscription content for playback on a computer, portable device, or networked device. Windows Media DRM 10 enables the seamless flow of content to almost any device, offers the widest range of purchase and rental options for digital media, and ensures the security of premium content as it flows from device to device. Also in January, SigmaTel's STMP35xx product family will support Microsoft's new Media Transfer Protocol (MTP), which offers easier driverless device setup.
"A majority of the online download services already use Windows Media DRM, and we expect more to offer enhanced capabilities enabled by the platform, including subscription service content," said Jonathan Usher, director of public relations in the Windows Digital Media Division at Microsoft. "As a leader in delivering controller chips in portable digital players, SigmaTel's direct support for our DRM 10 platform will expand these benefits to a massive audience of consumers."
"With an industry emphasis on digital rights management issues, Microsoft has developed a solution that can be implemented across a vast number of music distribution services," said Ron Edgerton, SigmaTel's president and CEO. "Our support of Windows Media DRM follows our path of commitment in providing the best support possible to the marketplace."
