IDG's CIO Executive Council Appoints Shaw Lively to New Position of Program Director, Financial Services

Business Wire, Oct 25, 2004

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. -- CIO Executive Council Creates Industry-Specific Program, Enhances Offerings to Members

The CIO Executive Council, a professional member-driven organization of chief information officers created by IDG's CXO Media, announces the appointment of Shaw Lively to program director of financial services. Lively is focused on building member outreach programs and tackling industry specific issues, as well as expanding the CIO Executive Council's financial services membership.

"Since the CIO Executive Council's launch in April, we have developed several task forces to address issues impacting CIOs across all industries, including one on IT workforce and others about improving CIO relationships with vendors and venture capitalists," says Mark Hall, general manager of the CIO Executive Council and CIO of CXO Media. "This new industry-specific focus on financial services complements the cross-industry work we're already doing and helps balance our members' needs to address both horizontal and vertical issues."

Lively adds, "Each industry presents its own unique set of challenges for CIOs to do their jobs and do them well. My goal is to guide and manage the initiatives of the Council's financial services CIOs as they collectively contend with pressing industry matters such as security, compliance, government regulation, competitive pressures and business integration."

Lively has a wealth of experience in the financial services industry, most recently serving as research manager of retail financial services at IDC where he developed market intelligence as well as business and technology strategies for financial services companies. Prior to IDC, his 12-year career in the financial services industry includes strategic and business development roles with Fleet Financial Group, Quick and Reilly brokerage, NatWest Bancorp and PNC Bank. Lively is also a frequent speaker at leading industry conferences, including Wall Street and Technology and the Securities Industry Association. He has also performed specific consulting projects with leading industry players including Fidelity Investments, JPMorgan Chase, Microsoft, Intuit, Prudential Financial, and Mellon Investor Services.

According to Hall, "Shaw's breadth of experience makes him the perfect candidate to deliver value to Council members, as well as to set the bar for future vertical industry programs. This is vital as the Council is already planning to launch vertical programs for both the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries."

"Due to the pace of change, financial services CIOs must really understand new technologies and new practices," says Bill Wray, CIO of Citizen's Bank and a member of the CIO Executive Council advisory board. "That understanding is best provided by industry peers who share their 'been there, done that' perspective. The CIO Executive Council's new vertical focus on financial services will help to orchestrate this exchange, as well as help drive the industry's growth, development and use of IT."

Following a series of one-on-one meetings with members and an analysis of each member's input, Lively will convene all financial services members in November to present the program's top three directives.
