ESPRE Solutions Publishes White Paper Report that Quantifies Performance Differences Between ESPRE Solutions' Lightning Strike Video CODEC and that of Windows Media Player v. 9, MPEG4 v. 3 and DIVX
Business Wire, Oct 26, 2004
PLANO, Texas -- New White Paper report demonstrates significant variances in the performance of some well-known video CODECs, showing ESPRE Solutions' video CODEC (LSVX) displayed better video quality at lower bit rates, encode times were substantially faster, and up to 30% less CPU usage during decoding (video playback).
ESPRE Solutions, Inc. (OTC Pink Sheets:EPRS), a Dallas-based media solutions and technology company with a revolutionary and patented video compression technology, today announced the release of an in depth white paper comparing the Lightning Strike Video CODEC to other well-known CODECs.
The report titled, The LSVX CODEC: A Technology Overview and Performance Evaluation, discusses the advantages of ESPRE's wavelet video compression technology. In addition to explaining how wavelet-based video compression works, ESPRE's report evaluates the performance of ESPRE's LSVX CODEC compared to Windows Media version 9 (WM9), MPEG4 version 3 and DIVX.
The ESPRE LSVX CODEC has a number of key advantages over other image and video compression methods in use today. A version of wavelet image compression used by ESPRE produces substantially smaller key frames and greatly reduces the amount and visibility of compression artifacts. Furthermore, the LSVX CODEC produces sharper video with better color saturation than its competitors at the same bit rates. The report points out that the LSVX CODEC compresses video more quickly and with lower CPU utilization than WM9, MPEG4 and DIVX.
According to Andy Wilson, ESPRE's VP of Product Management and Design, "we have attempted to create a white paper that is unbiased in an effort to provide our customers with a critical understanding of the technical underpinnings of ESPRE's video compression as well as showing them how and what advantages it would offer a user in concrete terms. This white paper allows ESPRE to show precisely how the Lightning Strike CODEC surpasses others CODECs, including the fact that the LSVX CODEC has better signal to noise ratios (PSNR), causing ESPRE's video playback to be much sharper."
Among the key findings discussed in the white paper:
Impacting Quality:
--LSVX provides near DVD quality video at lower bit rates than either MP4 or WM9.
--At lower bit rates, LSVX compression artifacts are less distracting than MP4 or WM9.
--Detail in compressed scenes is sharper (less fuzzy) than MP4 or WM9.
--Color range is greater (less splotchy) and truer (less hazy) than MP4 or WM9.
Impacting Efficiency:
--LSVX encode times are substantially faster than WM9 for equivalent quality.
--CPU & memory usage during LSVX encoding is approximately one fourth of WM9 encoding, and equivalent to MP4.
--LSVX uses 12% less CPU power during playback (decoding) than MP4 and 30% less than WM9.
--LSVX has substantially higher Peak Signal to Noise Ratios (PSNR) than MP4 and WM9.
--LSVX has much better interframe quality measured by the Feng Xaio DCT Quality method.
--LSVX has better target bitrate management, exceeding expectations on less than 3% of all frames.
Pete Ianace, ESPRE's CEO, states, "ESPRE Solutions harnesses its superior technology to create "first-to-market", "best-of-breed" applications. Because our LSVX CODEC requires less CPU power than other CODECs, we've been successful at pioneering 2-way video collaboration over a wireless PDA device. What truly separates ESPRE Solutions is our architecture (eViewNet), which allows us to take the LSVX CODEC and create unique groundbreaking applications for our customers. Besides our wireless PDA solution, ESPRE has leveraged its CODEC and middleware to create a complete suite of applications that include an end-to-end VOD server solution producing near-DVD quality at under 1mbps over a non-managed network like the Internet."
ESPRE Solutions' complete line of business and professional communication products include: eViewMail (video email that works on dial-up and broadband connections), eViewStream (video streaming), eViewLink (2-way video collaboration over a wireless PDA), eViewChat (8-way video conferencing without an MCU), eViewZoom (high-resolution zooming over the Internet), and eViewImage (JPEG compression tool). Through the anticipated acquisition of Modular Computing Systems, ESPRE Solutions will include an IPTV solution by mid-2005.
