Sendmail Puts Enterprises in Control of Email Security
Business Wire, Oct 26, 2004
EMERYVILLE, Calif. -- Unveils Mailstream Content Manager(TM), a breakthrough in email security; already in deployment for a quarter million users
Sendmail, Inc., the global provider of integrated message management solutions, has launched Mailstream Content Manager enabling enterprises to defend themselves against the rise in external and internal email security threats. Mailstream Content Manager combines powerful email content policy management with spam and virus protection into a single comprehensive solution, eliminating the need to manage islands of costly point products.
Market trends indicate that external email threats of spam, viruses and fraud are pervasive and growing. At the same time, the misuse and abuse of email by employees has created a legal and regulatory compliance risk. According to a recent survey by Osterman Research(1), the vast majority of companies have responded to this assault on their email systems by implementing a variety of point solutions, but nearly two-thirds of the companies surveyed would prefer an integrated application to reduce the cost and complexity of managing email content policies.
Mailstream Content Manager protects enterprises from this daily barrage of spam and viruses. It features an easy-to-use management console that allows business-specific policies to be changed or added quickly and easily, to support the most complex business process rules. The result is a more coordinated response to global email security threats. Importantly, Mailstream Content Manager leverages existing infrastructure investments such as directories, CRM systems or third-party content scanning technologies while protecting intellectual property in outgoing email or enforcing complex regulatory compliance requirements.
Mailstream Content Manager is the first application developed on the Sendmail Advanced Content Engine(TM), an innovative platform for message processing. Sendmail purchased this technology in an acquisition late last year of a Seattle-based start-up founded by messaging industry veterans. The platform provides an extensible framework that lets businesses easily integrate email into their application workflow, and enables Mailstream Content Manager to incorporate other communication protocols such as instant messaging, multi-media messaging or short message services. Additionally, Mailstream Content Manager enables enterprises to incorporate the management of emerging email authentication technologies, such as DomainKeys or Sender ID, as they become available.
"Managing email can feel like trying to hold back the tide," said John Stormer, Senior VP Worldwide Marketing at Sendmail. "Enterprises need a way to adapt quickly as new threats, and technologies to combat them, emerge. The introduction of Mailstream Content Manager is intended to provide one place where all messaging issues can be dealt with quickly. Our goal is to put email system managers back in the driver's seat."
"Email is one of our most business critical applications," says Marlene Schadegg, Head of Enterprise Messaging at Credit Suisse. "Over time we had to add routing and filtering layers which reduced our control and ease of management. Costs for maintenance and administration increased. With Sendmail's approach and solutions we are able to reduce complexity and improve management of the full email flow."
"Enterprises have responded to the plethora of email threats by implementing a complex patchwork of defense mechanisms. Managing them has become time-consuming and unwieldy," said Matt Cain, senior vice president at META Group, a leading provider of IT research, advisory services and strategic consulting. "As a result, many organizations are so busy fire-fighting that they won't be ready for the next email crisis, much less be in a position to adopt critical new technologies, such as sender authentication. In response, we'll see a shift away from point solutions towards integrated, adaptable email management platforms."
