EDGAR ONLINE to Utilize New XBRL Taxonomies in Product Enhancements
Business Wire, Sept 21, 2004
SOUTH NORWALK, Conn. -- EDGAR(R) Online(R), Inc. (NASDAQ: EDGR), a leading provider of value-added global business and financial information, announced today its plans to provide complete company financials in eXtensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL) via its flagship premium service EDGAR Online Pro and other product offerings.
The announcement came in conjunction with today's release of the US Financial Reporting Taxonomy Framework, a family of XBRL taxonomies that is compliant with XBRL International's XBRL Specification 2.1. The taxonomies are available on the Web at www.xbrl.org/us/usfrtf/2004-08-15/TaxonomyFrameworkOverview.htm .
EDGAR Online, a leader in XBRL data management, participated in an effort led by the American Institute of Certified Public Accounts (AICPA) and the XBRL-US Consortium to develop description and classification taxonomies that assign a universal code to each line item in publicly filed financial statements. These taxonomies will be utilized in EDGAR Online's upcoming product enhancements, making EDGAR Online one of the first companies to offer financial professionals access to comprehensive corporate financials in XBRL. Currently, customers of EDGAR Online can access summary data in XBRL, but the new taxonomies will allow EDGAR Online to offer complete company financials in XBRL for all U.S. public companies. EDGAR Online will release the series of product enhancements over the course of the next six months.
Susan Strausberg, president and CEO of EDGAR Online, said, "We are pleased to be working closely with the AICPA and XBRL-US. Now that the taxonomies are available for public comment, we are accelerating completion of next generation fundamental data products that utilize XBRL. XBRL has revolutionized the way financial services professionals are exchanging information. Emerging technologies such as XBRL and Web Services will allow EDGAR Online to further build value into financial information and create new products including an expanded set of fundamental corporate data."
Barry C. Melancon, president and CEO of the AICPA, said, "EDGAR Online is a founding member of the XBRL International Consortium and has consistently provided a leadership role in the development of XBRL. Their contributions to the taxonomies have provided an invaluable service to this worldwide effort. We will continue to rely on their input in the future."
Paul Penler, vice chair of XBRL International and chair of XBRL-US, said, "EDGAR Online's review, analysis and feedback have significantly contributed to making the XBRL-US GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) taxonomies commercially sustainable. The fact that EDGAR Online has made such a large commitment to the XBRL taxonomy and framework provides further evidence that XBRL brings value throughout the financial reporting supply chain."
