Frost & Sullivan Recognizes Calypso Wireless for Excellence in Wireless Switching Technology
Business Wire, Sept 22, 2004
LAS VEGAS -- At tonight's Excellence in Mobile Communications Awards Banquet, Frost & Sullivan will present Calypso Wireless, Inc. with the 2004 Excellence in Technology Award for the development of the company's innovative wireless switching technology, ASNAP(TM).
Calypso's patented automatic switching of network access points (ASNAP(TM)) technology represents the convergence of cellular and Wi-Fi, thereby enabling any mobile device to switch seamlessly between cellular and wireless IP networks through wireless local area network (WLAN). ASNAP(TM) also assists mobile carriers in achieving an efficient allocation of network resources by freeing cellular spectrum space for data and voice transmission, and increasing the availability of bandwidth for other users.
"Innovations such as the Internet-ready cell phones and WLAN public and private hot spots are creating an environment that is more conducive to the convergence of cellular and Wi-Fi services for both data and voice, and ASNAP(TM) is Calypso's innovative technology in this space," says Frost & Sullivan industry analyst Rajesh Kannan.
ASNAP(TM) allows cell phones and other mobile devices to automatically detect an available WLAN and then switch between the signals from a GSM/GPRS or CDMA cellular tower to a short-range broadband network such as cable with Wi-Fi. The wireless customers remain connected to the GSM/GPRS or CDMA network until their cell phone detects and switches to a Wi-Fi network, at a speed of up to 11 Mbps.
The technology has immense potential since it ensures global connectivity of voice, video, and data by way of the most efficient connection point, at a lower cost to both the mobile operator and the consumer. Switching between cellular and WLAN networks also enables movie-quality, real-time videoconferencing through cellular phones, fast pictures and video clips with data messaging and audio, and two-way data messaging.
"ASNAP(TM) could help carriers save billions of dollars in additional frequency spectrum and infrastructure equipment by offloading capacity to the WLAN and IP networks," says Rajesh. "WLAN owners would further benefit in that they accrue revenues from mobile carriers for calls and data that have been routed through their WLAN access points."
Calypso is also innovating other wireless systems that complement ASNAP(TM). The company's newly developed mobile phone, the C1250i, is the first of its kind that works on both traditional cellular/digital and Wi-Fi frequencies. Its impressive 30-frames-per-second video transmission capabilities make high-speed videoconferencing easy.
To make all this feasible, Calypso places greater emphasis on wireless technology research and allocates about 25 percent of the total invested capital in R&D. ASNAP(TM) represents the culmination of the company's groundbreaking work in the field, and with the onset of an age of Internet-browsing mobile devices the company has heralded a new technology with strong market potential.
Frost & Sullivan presents this Award each year to the company that has pioneered the development and introduction of an innovative technology, which has either influenced or has the potential to impact several market sectors. It acknowledges overall technical excellence of a company and its significant contributions to the industry in terms of adoption and competitive posture.
Held in Las Vegas, Frost & Sullivan's 2004 Excellence in Mobile Communications Awards Banquet honors world-class companies for outstanding performance and achievements in wireless and mobile strategy, technology, platforms, and services. An annual event, the banquet recognizes the quality and merit of distinguished individuals and companies.
