Roland Yoshida to Chair the ETS Visiting Panel on Research; 22nd Year Since Harold Howe Chaired the First Panel

Business Wire, Sept 7, 2004

PRINCETON, N.J. -- Roland Yoshida, Lehigh University Provost and Academic Affairs Vice President, has been selected to chair the ETS Visiting Panel on Research, company officials announced today. In this capacity he will help continue ETS's longstanding commitment to openness in educational testing.

The ETS Visiting Panel on Research, an external advisory group composed of distinguished education experts and policy-makers from organizations and universities across the country, is charged with reviewing the quality and appropriateness of ETS's research programs. The panel was begun 22 years ago as part of then-ETS President Greg Anrig's commitment to making the testing process more transparent and accountable to the public.

When the panel meets Oct. 28-29, its members will provide guidance and comment on the ETS research portfolio and the strategic direction and stewardship of the organization's research and development efforts. The panel, which presents its findings to the ETS Board of Trustees, also assesses how ETS implements and enforces the ETS Standards for Quality and Fairness in its programs and services. The Standards are available to the public on ETS's Web site at www.ets.org/fairness/download.html.> Yoshida is the author of more than 60 scholarly articles. His studies have examined ways to change teachers' behavior; how to improve academic opportunities for elementary school children with learning disabilities, and relationships between parents and schools. He has most recently focused on the ways in which new technologies are transforming learning environments, especially those of residential universities.

Yoshida, who assumed his current duties in 2000, joined the Lehigh University faculty in 1996 as the Dean of the School of Education, and is credited with advances it has made toward becoming one of the top education programs in the nation. Yoshida is a fellow of the American Psychological Association.

The members of the 2004-2005 ETS Visiting Panel on Research are:

--Roland Yoshida (Chair), Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Lehigh University

--Milfred C. Fierce, former Professor of History, Department of Africana Studies, Brooklyn College

--Ethel Rios-Orlandi, Professor, Department of Physical Sciences, University of Puerto Rico

When the panel meets this fall, an additional focus will be connecting research and development to the business and mission of ETS. Among the topics panel members will discuss are ETS's Information & Communication & Technology assessment the aim of which is to gauge whether students possess the ability to use digital technology to solve problems in order to function in an information society, and a Web-based, interactive data-retrieval system designed to put users of data in control of sets of information and help them compare different information sets.

Now in its 22nd year, the ETS Visiting Panel on Research was founded in March 1982 and had as its first chair Harvard Prof. Harold Howe II, United States Commissioner of Education in the Johnson Administration and then-vice president of the Ford Foundation. Known then as the ETS Visiting Committee, it was created as an independent commission of education leaders and critics from outside ETS. Other distinguished members on that first panel included Anne Anastasi, professor emeritus, Fordham University; Grace Baisinger, former president of The National PTA; and Jessica Matthews, editorial department, The Washington Post.
