Internet Systems Consortium and Cable & Wireless Install First Root Nameserver in Munich, Germany
Business Wire, Sept 9, 2004
REDWOOD CITY, Calif. -- Internet Systems Consortium (ISC) and Cable & Wireless have installed a new F-root nameserver at the INXS in Munich, Germany.
Joao Damas, F-root Programme Manager, stated, "ISC is extremely happy to be working with Cable & Wireless to enhance the resilience and service of the global DNS. Installation at the INXS exchange point increases root server reachability in Europe."
Root servers make available information for finding authoritative servers for top-level domains; there are several hundred such domains, including "DE," "COM," "ORG," "UK," etc. Computers use this information to interpret URLs and e-mail addresses and to perform other types of Internet transactions.
Michael Ratcliffe, Director IP Engineering, stated, "Cable & Wireless is delighted to be able to contribute to enhancing the European Internet infrastructure and helping improve the user experience by reducing nameserver response times."
In 2003, ISC deployed 17 new F-root nameserver sites around the globe, enhancing Internet response times in key regions and reducing the vulnerability of the Internet root nameserver system to malicious attacks. ISC has plans to deploy 12 new F-root nameservers around the globe in 2004.
