Congress Passes Bankruptcy Reform Bill, Houston Attorney Robert B. Hinsley Says, 'You Don't Need Bankruptcy!'

Business Wire, April 18, 2005

HOUSTON -- Recently Congress passed the most sweeping bankruptcy reform legislation in more than 25 years, seriously reducing the ability of consumers to file for bankruptcy.

Houston attorney Robert B. Hinsley says, "So what! While this bill makes it harder for consumers to file for bankruptcy, in the state of Texas most consumers benefit from bankruptcy only when they have more than several million dollars of debt. Bankruptcy will hurt more people than it helps. This bill slams the door to bankruptcy shut, but credit card consumers don't need it anyway."

Hinsley strongly agrees with the nationwide opponents of the bill who say the change would fall especially hard on low-income working people, single mothers, minorities and the elderly, and would remove a safety net for those who have lost their jobs. "Congress simply sold out to the credit card industry," says Hinsley.

A tough consumers' defense attorney, Hinsley has been fighting credit card companies for his clients for more than nine years. A practicing attorney for more than forty years, Hinsley helps his clients avoid bankruptcy by reducing their credit card debt using laws already written to protect the consumer.

"Credit card companies are just plain greedy," says Hinsley. "Our clients get immediate debt relief and long-term protection without resorting to bankruptcy. We've helped reduce or eliminate the credit card debt of more than 11,000 clients in Texas and elsewhere. Bankruptcy lawyers may be upset with this bill, but this bill won't affect our clients -- they'll still get the relief they need."
