Business Wire, April 21, 2005
MENLO PARK, Calif. -- Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers -- an innovator in providing "venture and relationship capital" (SM) services to entrepreneurs -- is pleased to announce Randy Komisar has become a KPCB partner, working with entrepreneurs who want to change the world.
"There's never been a better time than now to build world changing companies, so I am thrilled to join my long time friends at Kleiner Perkins," said Komisar. "I have always admired their commitment to serving the highest quality entrepreneurs. At KP, building meaningful relationships is the path to success."
John Doerr of KPCB said, "We have worked with Randy for years, have backed him in prior ventures and partnered with him on boards. Randy offers entrepreneurs a wealth of experience and judgment in building ventures, together with passion and enthusiasm for developing talent."
Komisar added, "I have dedicated the bulk of my career to serving startups that use technology to change the way we live. My passion is working with entrepreneurs to create impact with innovation. I get excited by an entrepreneur with a big idea who can't resist trying to make a difference."
"In my opinion, venture capital is about far more than simply investing in new businesses; it's a service business at the heart of the innovation industry. Increasingly, invention has become the purview of entrepreneurs rather than established businesses. What attracted me to Kleiner Perkins was the opportunity to be a partner with the best entrepreneurial leaders in creating impact through innovation."
Bill Campbell, Chairman of Intuit, said, "I have worked with Randy for nearly 20 years and I am excited that he will now bring his passion for people and innovation to a firm committed to helping create enduring companies."
Randy is a Consulting Professor of entrepreneurship at Stanford University and the author of a national best selling book on entrepreneurship, "The Monk and The Riddle." Randy has also authored several articles on innovation and entrepreneurship and speaks regularly around the world on such topics.
Randy was a founder of Claris Corporation and later the CFO of GO Corporation. He served as CEO and President of Lucas Arts Entertainment and Crystal Dynamics. He has been a "virtual CEO," partnering with entrepreneurs to turn their vision into businesses, for such companies as WebTV, TiVo, Global Giving and Mirra. Randy is currently the Chairman of the Nominating and Governance Committee for TiVo.
Komisar, 50, has a Bachelor's degree in Economics from Brown University and a J.D. from Harvard Law School.
Since its founding in 1972, KPCB has backed entrepreneurs in 450 ventures, including AOL, Align, Amazon.com, Citrix, Compaq Computer, Electronic Arts, Genentech, Genomic Health, Google, IDEC Pharmaceuticals, Intuit, Juniper Networks, Netscape, Lotus, LSI Logic, Sun Microsystems, Symantec, Verisign and Xilinx. More than 150 of the firm's portfolio companies have gone public. Many other ventures have achieved success through mergers and acquisitions.
