Packeteer Named Editor's Choice in Head-to-Head Review by Leading IT Publication; Comparative Review by IT Week Focuses on How Enterprises Can Use Traffic Management Techniques to Optimize WAN Performance

Business Wire, April 25, 2005

CUPERTINO, Calif. -- Packeteer(R), Inc. (Nasdaq:PKTR), the pioneer and global leader in WAN Application Traffic Management, today announced results from an IT Week test in which the company's PacketShaper 6500 was benchmarked against competing solutions to show how using traffic management techniques to optimize WAN performance can offer a cost-effective alternative to leasing extra capacity from service providers. Each of the three appliances tested takes a different approach to reducing and optimizing WAN traffic. Awarded Editor's Choice for the review, the PacketShaper 6500 delivers Layer 7 traffic inspection, allowing administrators to identify specific data packets and use prioritization techniques to allocate bandwidth to the applications or processes that need it most.

"We are delighted to have our PacketShaper appliance recognized for its application traffic management capabilities," said David Puglia, vice president of marketing for Packeteer. "Thousands of enterprises have selected our family of WAN Application Traffic Management solutions for the very reasons that IT Week found. This test reinforces the value our appliances bring to the enterprise -- we make WAN traffic management easy by offering easy-to-deploy, robust traffic management features."

In addition to the PacketShaper 6500, the test featured the NetIntact PacketLogic PL2 and the Peribit SR-50 Sequence Reducer. The appliances were tested to determine how they work, how easy they are to install and configure, and for their traffic inspection capabilities.

How They Tested

While the Peribit SR-50 Sequence Reducer was tested in a closed network environment, the PacketShaper and PacketLogic appliances were connected to a 2 Mbps WAN connection linked to a LAN comprised of a variety of Windows-based servers and workstations. Additionally, since traffic inspection capabilities can be used in a myriad of different scenarios, the test did not run any specific performance features, but instead used a variety of everyday applications to see how well they coped.

The review states "Packeteer has made the best effort to ensure traffic management is as painless as possible," and also finds the PacketShaper to:

--Be the easiest to use

--Have unrivaled traffic management features

--Offer an impressive range of management and reporting capabilities
