Regis University Chooses Whale's SSL VPN to Provide Secure Remote Access to Microsoft SharePoint Portal; Leading Academic Institution To Give 17,000 University Faculty, Staff and Students Access to Key Higher-Education Portal
Business Wire, April 25, 2005
FORT LEE, N.J. -- Whale Communications today announced that Regis University chose Whale's SSL VPN to give its 17,000 university faculty, staff and students access to a higher-education portal, providing anytime, anywhere access to key information and applications.
Colorado-based Regis University, a leading academic institution, was looking for a technology solution that would seamlessly integrate with their web-based Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2003 to provide remote access to collaborative applications from any Internet-connected computer while maintaining security.
"As an institution of higher learning we are always seeking to leverage cutting edge technology to give our faculty, staff and students the tools available to enhance their educational experience," said Peter Greco, Regis University's CIO. "We adopted SharePoint as our portal of choice for its robustness, however, extending access to it from any web-browser was cumbersome. We looked at a number of solutions before selecting Whale's SSL VPN. Whale was the only vendor we found that was able to provide access as it was intended - on the application level - without having to resort to potentially insecure lower-layer tunneling. With Whale we have much more freedom and flexibility."
The portal provides access to course information, campus updates, and email as well as other applications.
Selected by Network Computing Magazine as the best SSL VPN solution in 2004, Whale's technology offers exceptional flexibility. Its Application Aware(TM) approach provides deep levels of security policy granularity, enhanced user experience and easy integration into existing network infrastructures and applications such as SharePoint.
"We are happy that we are able to give a venerable institution like Regis University the ability to extend their education portal to their faculty, staff and students," said Daniel Steiner, President of Whale. "The fact that we were the only SSL VPN that Regis University found to be capable of providing this access at the application level attests to the significant value of providing a solution that is not only generic but also capable of being Application Aware."
