InnerWireless Establishes Healthcare Business Unit And Announces Series C Funding

Business Wire, April 26, 2005

RICHARDSON, Texas -- InnerWireless(R), Inc., announced today that it has established a healthcare business unit to deliver the Medical-Grade Wireless Utility(TM). The utility includes a unifying wireless platform and portfolio of services to facilitate the development of an adaptive mobile enterprise strategy. E[acute accent]Today's healthcare providers are sophisticated and highly mobile workers requiring real-time communication and reliable access to mission- and life-critical data for Point-of-Decision Care(TM). Healthcare executives are being challenged to select technologies that can help them address priority business objectives that optimize patient care and deliver real value to the bottom line. E[acute accent]Accelerated by the recent closing of a $15 million Series C investment, InnerWireless has completed the first phase and launch of a dedicated healthcare team. The newly formed business unit includes marketing and corporate development staff, and additional regional sales offices. E[acute accent]"I am very excited about the ability to attract experienced healthcare professionals to help our customers create and implement best-practice solutions," said James Taylor, Director, Wireless Healthcare at InnerWireless. E[acute accent]Until now, wireless installations in hospitals have required separate and often dedicated infrastructures, leading to redundant costs, disruptions to patient care, and inadequate wireless coverage resulting in a difficult-to-manage environment that does not easily adapt to demands for future technologies and applications. The Medical-Grade Wireless Utility architecture allows hospitals to deploy an array of wireless applications and devices for real-time clinical communications, monitoring and therapy, as well as wireless building services, on a unified, common wireless infrastructure. In addition, the InnerWireless utility includes a portfolio of services to assist hospitals with the planning, deployment and management of their wireless environment. E[acute accent]"We are making a significant investment in our healthcare business by adding a highly skilled and experienced healthcare team to address the unique challenges of the healthcare market. In conjunction with strategic alliances, our growing list of industry-leading information systems, medical device, and technology ecosystem partners, we are committed to delivering clinical and business-impacting solutions to our customers," said Rick Gentry, InnerWireless Vice President, Healthcare. E[acute accent]Leading healthcare institutions including Children's Memorial Hospital of Chicago, Mountain States Health Alliance of Tennessee, and the newly opened University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital are partnering with InnerWireless to meet their strategic and business objectives. E[acute accent]"We chose the InnerWireless system because it is meshed with our vision," said Eric B. Yablonka, Vice President and CIO, University of Chicago Hospitals and Health System. "Specifically, we required a wireless distribution system that could make wireless work everywhere in the hospital, and we prefer to work with one company rather than several distinct vendors who wanted to build separate wireless networks." E[acute accent]In addition to InnerWireless' current investors, the Series C funding marks the initial investment in InnerWireless by Centennial Ventures, a leading venture capital firm that invests in emerging network and enabling software companies. Centennial Ventures has invested in more than 100 communications and related companies. In connection with the Series C investment, Centennial Ventures Managing Director, David Hull, joins the InnerWireless board of directors. Hull is based in Houston, and has more than 25 years of successful venture experience. E[acute accent]"We're seeing a number of new wireless applications being introduced to the workplace, and that translates into the need for ubiquitous wireless coverage and high reliability in any modern building," Hull said. "We are pleased to join the InnerWireless board, and we believe that Centennial's experience on the carrier side of the wireless business will help create value for InnerWireless." E[acute accent]InnerWireless CEO Ed Cantwell added: "We plan to utilize the investment to further accelerate the company's growth and expansion into new markets. The proliferation of wireless services, applications and devices will drive the need and required investment in enabling infrastructure technologies."
