BakBone Announces Industry's First 64-Bit Backup and Recovery Solution for Mac OS X Tiger Environments
Business Wire, April 27, 2005
SAN DIEGO -- BakBone Software(TM) (TSX:BKB)(Pink Sheets:BKBO), a global provider of data protection software, today announced a comprehensive data protection server solution for Apple's Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger. BakBone is the first backup and recovery solution provider to announce 64-bit support for Tiger, and has successfully completed initial compatibility testing between BakBone's NetVault software and the Tiger platform.
"We're continuing to see considerable enterprise market acceptance for Mac OS X along with a need for data protection solutions that address the exponential data growth and performance requirements of the platform," said Bharat Kumar, vice president of marketing, BakBone Software. "Once again, we're proud to respond to customer demand with a first-to-market approach, introducing low-cost, scalable, feature-rich data protection functionality in NetVault that perfectly meets Tiger users' enterprise storage needs."
"Tiger has hundreds of breakthrough features that create a powerful and easy-to-use platform for server operations in heterogeneous environments," said Ron Okamoto, Apple's vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations. "We're thrilled that BakBone is utilizing the innovation in Tiger to ensure robust data protection on the Mac OS X platform."
Growing numbers of enterprises are embracing the Mac OS X platform to support increasing volumes of data-intensive applications that demand larger memory capacity, robust performance and enhanced throughput for high data availability. The ability to support both 64-bit and 32-bit processor applications running side-by-side enables end users to leverage NetVault's inherent flexibility and move seamlessly to Tiger in a backup environment.
"NetVault is the real deal. It is the first serious enterprise-level backup and recovery solution for Mac OS X," said Samuel A. Litt, vice president of Macintosh consulting services and creative technology for Manhattan-based Kapra Consultants and author of the "Mac OS X Bible Tiger and Panther Editions". "Delivering enterprise-class data protection on the Macintosh platform is significant and should bolster Tiger's appeal in corporate data centers."
Designed to address the new reality of multi-terabyte file storage such as high-definition (HD), NetVault accommodates both single-server backup requirements and dispersed servers and computing platforms. With the ability to handle widescreen HD and next-generation graphic and video image quality standard in Tiger, today's single-server backup applications are rendered inadequate and can now be replaced by the advanced disk-to-disk or Virtual Disk Library (VDL) functionality in NetVault. Using a VDL approach, users can run nightly backups on the VDL with a much smaller backup window and then transfer data to tape during the day without impacting the production environment. For many small and medium-sized businesses, data center users, and education and digital pro media departments this increased scalability is ideal for easily deploying and managing an advanced yet easily integrated enterprise-class data protection solution that delivers high-end performance without the cost and complexity of high-end offerings.
