HighBeam Research Provides Complimentary Access for Supreme Court Justices, Members of the Cabinet and Members of Congress to Its Online Research Service
Business Wire, April 28, 2005
CHICAGO -- Patrick Spain, founder, chairman and CEO of HighBeam(TM) Research, Inc., responded today to a congressman's recent allegation that there's something wrong with a member of the U.S. Supreme Court doing his own research on the Internet. In addition, the operator of an online research engine for individuals (www.highbeam.com) announced a program that offers complimentary access to Supreme Court Justices, U.S. Senators, U.S. Representatives, Cabinet Members and qualifying journalists.
"There's nothing at all outrageous about doing your own research on the Internet," Spain said.
He was responding to House Majority Leader Tom DeLay's recent criticism of Justice Anthony Kennedy on Fox News Radio in which DeLay said, "(Kennedy) said in session that he does his own research on the Internet? That is just incredibly outrageous."
Spain said, "While unfettered search engine results can include questionable sources along with good ones, HighBeam Research provides access only to sources that are unquestionably credible. Doing your own research on the Internet is an excellent idea for anyone using the more than 3,000 reliable sources we provide."
HighBeam Research is providing complimentary Full Memberships for each of the U.S. Supreme Court Justices.
"We're certain that if the Justices use their complimentary HighBeam Research memberships, they will find the service quick, accurate and efficient," Spain said. "And we used our own HighBeam Research service to make sure that these complimentary memberships do not violate any rules regarding gifts."
In addition, Spain said that because HighBeam Research believes that the legislative and executive branches of government need to be just as well informed as the judicial branch, the company will provide complimentary Full Memberships to federal lawmakers and Cabinet members upon request.
"We'll even provide one to Representative DeLay, should he have a change of heart," Spain added.
The HighBeam Research Engine includes a collection of 33 million articles from more than 3,000 leading journals, newspapers and magazines unavailable for free on the Internet. Among other benefits, Full Membership provides unlimited access to full-text articles and research tools to search, sort, save into folders and even share full-text articles via e-mail and blog tools. HighBeam Research normally charges $19.95 per month or $99.95 per year for a Full Membership.
The company's offer of complimentary Full Memberships is an extension of an existing program through which it has long provided complimentary access to qualifying journalists. Members of Congress, the Cabinet and journalists can learn more about the program at www.highbeam.com/about/media.asp.
