Microtune Ships 20-Millionth Single-Chip Silicon TV Tuner; Doubling Unit Volume Shipments in Less Than 10 Months, Microtune Continues to Lead the Industry in Single-Chip Silicon TV Tuner Unit Sales
Business Wire, August 1, 2005
PLANO, Texas -- Microtune(R), Inc. (Nasdaq:TUNE) today announced that last week it shipped its twenty-millionth MicroTuner(TM) single-chip silicon TV tuner, doubling its unit-volume shipments in less than ten months. This milestone reconfirms Microtune's position as the world's leading single-chip silicon TV tuner supplier, having shipped today more of these TV tuner semiconductors than all of its competitors combined.
Microtune, the inventor of the single-chip silicon TV tuner, is a leading supplier of innovative radio frequency (RF) silicon and systems solutions for consumer electronics and broadband communications. Today, 53 U.S. patents protect Microtune's RF-integrated circuit technology and other inventions.
"We thank our customers and technology partners for helping us reach our twenty-millionth tuner shipped achievement in such a short period of time," said James A. Fontaine, President and CEO of Microtune. 'With a diversified portfolio of MicroTuner tuners-ranging from very high-performance 1GHz tuners to very ultra low-power digital tuners--we are committed to meet our customers' needs for market-proven RF solutions that enable product innovation, customization and cost-effectiveness. As the world transitions from analog to digital, we will continue to introduce leading-edge RF technologies that support the next wave of our customers' devices."
Leading equipment suppliers have incorporated Microtune's tuners as integral components of their products, including such companies as Advanced Digital Broadcast, ARRIS, ATI Technologies Inc., Samsung Electro-Mechanics Co., Ltd., Scientific-Atlanta and Toshiba Module Group. In the process, they developed new classes of feature-rich TV and cable products that are driving market momentum for digital TV convergence -- high-definition TVs, HDTV/PVR set-top boxes, voice over IP (VoIP) cable modems and multimedia PCs. Deploying Microtune's tuners, their high-value products comply with rigid industry standards and are engineered to deliver the superior RF signal quality and reliability that are demanded by today's consumers.
"Microtune revolutionized TV tuner technology in 1999 when it introduced the MicroTuner tuner, and our chips ignited the drive to RF consumer product miniaturization," Mr. Fontaine added. "We continue to strengthen our position in the emerging digital TV and convergence markets. With our patented technology, leading market position and combined silicon and systems expertise, we are committed to grow as these markets develop, while continuing to set the pace for RF silicon innovation."
Microtune shipped its ten-millionth MicroTuner tuner on October 1, 2004 and shipped its five-millionth device in March 2004, four years after it began commercially delivering its single-chip silicon TV tuner.
Microtune has produced eight generations of its tuner, continually integrating new features while reducing the power and increasing the performance of the devices. The current portfolio offers analog/digital and digital tuners, including the company's newest products, ultra low- power mobile TV tuners for handheld devices. As a distinguishing feature, the MicroTuner tuners are designed to operate in multi-tuner architectures, supporting both multi-functional set-top boxes and multimedia TVs.
