Nuance Makes Big Bang at SpeechTEK Show; Voice Automation Leader Wins ''Best Speaker Verification Deployment'' and ''Big Bang'' Awards at SpeechTEK 2005

Business Wire, August 22, 2005

MENLO PARK, Calif. -- After an event-packed week showcasing new products and sharing speech-related best practices at SpeechTEK 2005, Nuance (Nasdaq:NUAN), the voice automation expert, is celebrating two Speech Technology Magazine "Speech Solutions Award" wins recognizing the company's "impactful speech deployments." Nuance was honored with the "Best Speaker Verification Deployment" for its Nuance Verifier 3.5 voice authentication software and the "Big Bang Award" for fueling Clarissa, a speech-powered astronaut assistant developed by NASA. The awards were presented on August 3 during SpeechTEK 2005 at the Marriott Marquis in New York City.

The fifth annual Speech Solutions Awards, chosen by Speech Technology Magazine readers, are bestowed upon the "individuals and companies whose efforts have propelled the industry forward." Nuance's award-winning Nuance Verifier 3.5 enables secure self-service transactions, increasing automation and decreasing call center costs in the process. With Verifier 3.5, a caller creates a unique voiceprint by enrolling in the system. Then, when she or he calls the application later to check an account balance, for example, the voice on the phone is compared to the previously-enrolled voiceprint on file. If there is a match, the caller is accepted.

Nuance is also pushing voice automation to new heights with Clarissa, recently tested aboard the International Space Station. Clarissa will use Nuance speech recognition to guide in-flight astronauts through thousands of complex -- but necessary -- procedures related to life support systems, medical exams, science experiments and space suit check-out -- all via voice.

Back on earth -- and at the show -- Nuance chronicled, in real-time, SpeechTEK keynote and industry insights sessions, including former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani's talk on "The Six Principles of Leadership" on the new Nuance speech blog.
