The Telegraph Group Selects NewspaperDirect's SmartEdition ePaper Solution
Business Wire, August 23, 2005
VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- NewspaperDirect (www.newspaperdirect.com) is pleased to announce that The Telegraph Group Limited, London, has selected its SmartEdition ePaper solution as the technology foundation for its newly launched Telegraph Screenprint at http://screenprint.telegraph.co.uk.
NewspaperDirect's SmartEdition solution allows publishers to display their newspapers on the web in their original formats, with no capital investment and with zero operational costs.
Built for its subscribers as a comprehensive, privately branded ePaper, Telegraph Screenprint provides online readers of The Daily Telegraph and The Sunday Telegraph with the traditional printed newspaper "look and feel" together with a variety of digital reading tools, including article linking, table of contents, instant translation into 11 languages (Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Greek, Korean, Japanese, Portuguese and German) and full text search.
Telegraph.co.uk has one of the largest measured audiences and is a recognized leader in the online publishing world. Richard Doerr, Acting IT Director at The Telegraph, says, "We are always focused on delivering the best experience to our readers. We know that there are people who want a traditional paper product, and people who are comfortable browsing our web site. In addition, we wanted to provide an electronic newspaper that would fit between these two, giving the experience of a traditional newspaper, but online. After a careful review, we selected NewspaperDirect as our Screenprint ePaper solution provider to deliver a sophisticated replica of The Daily Telegraph and The Sunday Telegraph newspapers online."
"The process of working with NewspaperDirect has been superb," added Mr. Doerr. "We got exactly what we wanted, even with very challenging deadlines. The operation is fully automated -- we send PDFs to NewspaperDirect as part of the normal production process, they merge the pages, handle the marketing and subscriptions, provide us with a readership report, and every month they send us a cheque. It couldn't be simpler."
Alex Kroogman, NewspaperDirect CEO, says, "This is a significant product initiative for The Telegraph Group and one which provides it with a turnkey solution and its subscribers with advanced online and offline reading capabilities. This deal reaffirms NewspaperDirect as an industry-leading partner for ePublishing solutions.
"Increasingly, publishers must provide advanced navigation for online readers who are seeking timely, complete and branded information from their preferred news source," adds Mr. Kroogman. "With our SmartEdition solution, the traditional printed newspaper is replicated to bring readers the news they seek in a familiar format, and to develop a revenue-generating digital product for publishers. Telegraph Screenprint represents a new standard for online newspaper publishing built on proven technology and innovation. It also represents a strategic move into the online realm that newspapers need to make in order to reach the younger generation and previously untapped markets."
