DefenseWeb Awarded Department of Defense Contract for Computer Based Training Course; Partners with Serco to Develop Interactive, Web-Based Training Course Regarding the Mobile Military Child

Business Wire, August 25, 2005

SAN DIEGO -- DefenseWeb Technologies, a premier custom software developer and systems integrator serving Department of Defense (DoD) organizations, announced today that it has entered into an agreement with Serco, Inc. to develop computer-based training for the Department of Defense, Educational Opportunities Directorate.

Under terms of the contract, DefenseWeb will develop a dynamic, interactive computer-based training course designed to educate school administrators and teachers on the needs, challenges, transition and deployment issues of military students. The training will further provide best practices, guidelines and consistent strategies to help high mobility military students become more engaged in school.

The content may include course material previously developed by educational experts from Columbia University and Johns Hopkins University, and will address issues such as:

--Social and emotional needs facing the mobile military child

--Transfer of records, coursework and grades

--Incompatible, redundant or missed graduation requirements

--Special education needs and services

Course content will also include information from recognized "Promising Practices" outlined on the division's Web site, www.militarystudents.org.

"We share the Department of Defense's commitment to help make the transition from school to school more efficient, more effective, and less traumatic for students of military personnel," said DefenseWeb CEO Douglas W. Burke. "And we are pleased to partner with Serco, which has a very successful track record providing professional services to the federal government."

A subsequent award to this contract involves the development of educational toolkits to assist military leaders, school educators and military families involved in large-scale military relocations. Initiatives such as Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC), Global Rebasing and Army Modularization will precipitate those moves.

"Development of the toolkit will come from the Military Child in Transition and Deployment Social Compact Committee, comprised of representatives from the Educational Opportunities Directorate, Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA), Child & Youth Services, and the Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP)," added DefenseWeb Army Program Manager Tonya Bowers. "Their mission is to provide qualitative information, recommendations and planning checklists to impacted Commanders, Superintendents and Parents."

The toolkits will provide knowledge and resources to act in a timely, well-informed and productive manner; to prepare military families to be informed and skilled advocates to make the transition for military students positive and productive; and to promote goodwill within the communities that surround the installations.
