Mobile Handset Bug Fixed in a Minute Using InnoPath's Over-the-Air Mobile Device Management Solution; KDDI's Mobile Subscribers Experience World's First Automatic Over-the-Air Software Update
Business Wire, August 29, 2005
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- InnoPath Software, Inc. (www.innopath.com) the industry leader in over-the-air (OTA) mobile device management, today announced that KDDI Corporation, a leading wireless operator in Japan successfully updated tens of thousands of OTA-enabled handsets since July 11th using InnoPath's end-to-end mobile device management solution. Upon discovering a software bug in one of the applications on the thousands of mobile phones that were shipped, KDDI was able to send a patch over-the-air to ensure that all their subscribers' affected handsets were fixed. By having an OTA mobile device management system in place, KDDI avoided having to do a device recall. Based on Strategy Analytics research, it is estimated a product recall will cost wireless carriers and handset manufacturers between $42 and $72 per handset.
With InnoPath's DeltaUpgrade Plus(TM) device management solution embedded on their handsets, KDDI's subscribers were able to receive a software patch to fix the bug remotely and seamlessly in a minute's time. KDDI is the first carrier to have issued an automatic update to mobile subscribers in Japan, and the first to adopt an automatic firmware update solution via a "Push" update, as opposed to a "Pull" update that users must initiate themselves.
"By delivering fast, efficient and reliable software updates without asking our customer to come to a service center, helps increase customer satisfaction," said Mr. Kimihiko Nakamura, general manager, Mobile Terminal Development Department, "au" Service & Product Planning Division of KDDI Corporation. "The success rate at which the handsets were fixed, as well as the speed of the update time, clearly met with our requirements. We look forward to providing subscribers with an improved user experience."
"Our ability to provide OTA firmware updates in a matter of minutes resides in our patented technology that produces the smallest possible update packages by calculating the difference in data packets between the existing and new version of the software," said Dr. Luosheng Peng, CEO, chairman and co-founder of InnoPath Software. "With InnoPath's unique technology, update packages can be reduced significantly, which minimizes download time. As a result, subscribers can spend less time updating their handsets and more time enjoying them."
InnoPath's DeltaUpgrade Plus modular and flexible architecture allows wireless operators such as KDDI and their handset manufacturer partners to manage their mobile devices efficiently and in a cost effective manner. The company is also researching the development and deployment of future enhancements such as remote diagnostics and feature upgrades, including user interface customization and anti-virus software downloads. These applications will drive significant business value, enabling wireless operators to quickly identify and resolve customer issues, improve the mobile phone user experience and increase revenues.
Leading operators and handset manufacturers have selected InnoPath's update-ready technology as the preferred carrier grade device management solution. InnoPath is the first OTA device management company to actively update handset firmware in commercial deployments, and has helped to bring the first commercialized OTA-capable mobile phones to market. Today, millions of handsets have been updated in the hands of subscribers with mobile device technology provided by InnoPath.
