OpenService Awarded a Department of Defense Small Business Innovation Research Contract by the United States Air Force Research Labs for Security Incident Response

WESTBOROUGH, Mass. -- OpenService(TM), Inc., the leader in real-time enterprise security information management (SIM) and event correlation software, announces the receipt of a Phase 1 contract from The Department of Defense (DoD) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program to support collaborative research with the United States Air Force (USAF) Research Labs.

The purpose of DoD's SBIR program is to harness the innovative talents of the nation's small technology companies for U.S. military and economic strength. On this project, the USAF Research Labs will work with OpenService to utilize the company's security information management and event correlation expertise to develop a more effective incident response decision aid (irDA) that will guide Level I operators in the analysis, verification, notification and remediation of security incidents. The belief net-based irDA will fuse the outputs of security threat manager with other in-context digital evidence and recommend the optimal course of action to the operator.

The research is based on OpenService's Security Management Center (SMC) suite. It includes two distinct but related modules: Security Threat Manager (STM) 3.5 for real-time network security event management and correlation, and Security Log Manager (SLM) for real-time security compliance reporting and analysis.

The DoD SBIR program, funded at approximately $1.079 billion in FY 2005, is made up of 10 participating components: (see Figure 1): Army, Navy, Air Force, Missile Defense Agency (MDA), Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), Chemical Biological Defense (CBD), Special Operations Command (SOCOM), Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), and the Office of Secretary of Defense (OSD).
