Intellon Unveils World's First HomePlug® AV Integrated Circuit; First No New Wires® IC based on Global HomePlug AV Specification Ushers in a New Era of Home Entertainment Networking
Business Wire, Dec 12, 2005
OCALA, Fla. -- Intellon Corporation, the global leader in HomePlug-compatible integrated circuits (ICs) for home networking, networked entertainment and broadband over powerline (BPL) applications, today announced the world's first integrated circuit (IC) based on the new 200Mbps HomePlug AV specification. Designated the INT6000, the new IC will enable multiple high-definition video streams to be distributed over existing home powerlines, coaxial cable or other wiring with whole-house coverage, low latency and robust Quality of Service (QoS).
The INT6000 represents the latest generation of standards-based powerline communications ICs introduced by Intellon. The company leads the market in sales of HomePlug ICs, with over three million HomePlug 1.0 and HomePlug 1.0 with Turbo ICs in use on six continents.
"Intellon is poised for exceptional growth by virtue of their leadership position in the HomePlug enablement marketplace," said Joyce Putscher, principal analyst residential connectivity, In-Stat. "This announcement confirms their continued innovation in a market that by all measures will expand rapidly and in multiple directions."
Intellon's INT6000 provides an ideal solution for distributing entertainment content over existing wiring in the digital home. With a 200 Mbps PHY bandwidth, robust QoS and the ability to operate over powerline and coax networks, the INT6000 provides reliable, cost-effective whole house coverage with more installation flexibility, ease of use and network ubiquity than any other home networking technology. The INT6000 includes built-in 128-bit AES encryption and is compatible with products based on the HomePlug 1.0 powerline communications specification, including Intellon's HomePlug 1.0 and 1.0 with Turbo ICs.
The INT6000 is based on the worldwide HomePlug AV specification approved by the HomePlug Powerline Alliance earlier this year. The specification was created by an international group of companies from Asia, Europe and North America. Intellon was a major contributor to the specification. This standards-based, multi-vendor approach assures customers they will have the benefits of continuous innovation, cost-effective, inter-operable solutions and multiple sources of supply. The sponsor members of the HomePlug Powerline Alliance include Comcast, Earthlink, Linksys (a division of Cisco), General Electric, Intel, Motorola, RadioShack, Sharp and Sony.
"The INT6000 will change the way people distribute entertainment content in their homes," said Charlie Harris, Chairman and CEO of Intellon Corporation. "With the INT6000, any consumer electronics product, PC, broadband modem, set top box, personal video recorder or flat-screen display can share robust high definition video and audio by simply plugging the product into a convenient electrical outlet. Intellon is proud to continue its global leadership in powerline communications by being the first company to introduce an IC based on the widely-anticipated HomePlug AV specification."
Intellon's market-proven HomePlug 1.0 and 1.0 with Turbo ICs are being used in a wide range of consumer and commercial applications, including broadband sharing and extension, whole-house distribution of audio, standard definition video and IPTV. The INT6000 will expand these capabilities to higher bandwidth applications such as high definition video.
Intellon will demonstrate its INT6000 IC at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas January 4 - 6, 2006 at Booth 31850, Las Vegas Convention Center. Sample INT6000 ICs and enablement tools will be available to customers during the first quarter of 2006. Initial consumer products using the INT6000 IC are expected during the second quarter of 2006. The INT6000 IC will be submitted for HomePlug certification following HomePlug's completion of the certification and interoperability standards for HomePlug AV.
