Danger Conducts Software Upgrade for T-Mobile Sidekick II Users; Exciting Features Include a New Web Browser and Unlimited Game Storage
Business Wire, Dec 13, 2005
PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Danger, Inc., a mobile software and services company, today announced that the company is currently updating the software for all T-Mobile Sidekick II users in the U.S. and Germany. Its advanced mobile Internet platform allows Danger to conduct the over-the-air (OTA) upgrade concurrently to users in both countries. By year end, Danger will have successfully completed over 1 million OTA upgrades worldwide since launching its mobile Internet platform in 2002. As a result of this upgrade process, owners of Danger-powered devices will have a handset with more software features and capabilities than when they first purchased the product.
Danger's mobile Internet platform, the integrated client/server infrastructure behind Danger-powered devices, makes high volumes of remote software upgrades possible. The client/server system delivers updated software wirelessly to users through a simple download and installation process, which occurs in the background as the customer continues to use his/her device. Once the process has begun, Danger can simultaneously update thousands of users per hour throughout the day.
"Danger's leadership in OTA technology is just one of the ways that we leverage our mobile Internet platform to the benefit of operators and end users," said Hank Nothhaft, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Danger, Inc. "Our goal is to help our operator partners consistently delight customers and 'future proof' Danger-powered handsets with new features and content."
Operator Benefit
Danger's platform enables operators to deliver widespread software updates to customers without the need for expensive manual update processes. OTA capabilities also allow operators to efficiently upgrade handset software to match ongoing upgrades that are occurring in the network. Ultimately, by improving the end-user experience in an ongoing basis, operators generate more loyalty to the service offering and the company brand.
Consumer Benefit
Users of Danger-powered devices know that over time they will receive updated software that includes new features and capabilities, and enjoy a product that continually improves. In addition, installation of the new software is seamless and requires little effort. Best of all, it's free.
New Features
Below is a select list of the new features and benefits that Sidekick II users in Germany and the US will experience after receiving their software upgrade. T-Mobile UK recently launched the Sidekick II with the updated software already installed.
A completely revamped HTML Web browser that includes the following:
--JavaScript support: Simply put, more Internet content is now available through the browser. For example, users get improved access to banking Web sites, as well as destinations such as Evite.
--"Find" and "Find Again" commands: Easy to search for keywords while surfing the Web
--Select and copy text from Web pages: Copy and share Web text directly with friends through SMS, IM or email
--Expanded graphics and font support: Richer visual browsing experience
Unlimited game and application storage
--Users can uninstall and reinstall previously purchased applications on the device for no extra charge: This means that there is no limit to the amount of games and applications that can be used on the product. This is a unique benefit of Danger's content offering, fully leveraging the integrated client-server architecture.
Compatibility with Java(TM) 2 Platform, Micro Edition(TM)
--Danger's software platform is now Java compatible: Ensures that new and innovative games and applications will continue to be added to the platform
Improved Usability

For example, if a user sees the phone number of a friend in an email, he or she can simply click on that number in the email and it will instantly populate the calling screen in the phone application. One more click and the phone will dial that number directly.
--Instant messenger field in address book: Provides another important means of keeping track of friends and colleagues
Enhanced personalization
--View and assign buddy icons in AIM: Richer AIM experience, more closely mirrors the desktop experience
