Orthofix Deploys Intrusion's Compliance Commander to Handle HIPAA Compliance
Business Wire, Feb 1, 2005
RICHARDSON, Texas -- State-of-the-Art Data Privacy System Eliminates False Positive Alerts and Blocks Potential HIPAA Violations
Intrusion Inc. (Nasdaq:INTZ) ("Intrusion") announced today the successful deployment of its Compliance Commander HIPAA Compliance Module (HCM) at Orthofix International N.V. The HCM can instantly detect and block unencrypted electronic patient health information (ePHI) from being transmitted either deliberately or unintentionally. Additionally, the HCM forwards real-time alerts to Intrusion's web-based Compliance Commander monitor system to notify network administrators and HIPAA compliance officers of the violations. Alerts can also be sent via email and/or pager.
With superior throughput and real-time detection and protection capabilities, the Compliance Commander HCM constantly watches every network port and protocol. Unlike other systems that intermittently scan "sample" traffic or narrowly focus on only a few communication protocols, HCM recognizes ePHI across all ports and protocols, including attachments, database accesses and file transfers. Using Intrusion's advanced Dynamic Data Dictionary (D3) technology, HCM automatically synchronizes with the healthcare provider's patient information to provide exact matches for highest accuracy.
"Orthofix continuously strives to employ state-of-the-art compliance monitoring," explained Rhonda Fellows, HIPAA Privacy Officer at Orthofix. "We're pleased to have achieved our objective with the deployment of Intrusion's Compliance Commander HCM. The HCM actually helps automate Orthofix's compliance process versus human monitoring for possible violations. Now, equipped with this powerful new tool, in addition to our existing compliance enforcement, we can continue to take proactive steps to educate our employees about proper communications techniques and policies for safeguarding ePHI."
Fran Haggerty, Orthofix IT Director, added, "We did extensive testing of the Compliance Commander HCM prior to ordering Intrusion's full system. Our Information Security staff was impressed with HCM's real-time alerts and the detailed information they contain."
Compliance Commander's D3 technology is completely automated and, once set up, never needs to be manually updated, tuned or periodically adjusted. The D3 system allows healthcare providers to determine how often the system synchronizes with updated ePHI. Therefore, HCM adapts to the healthcare providers' data privacy, compliance and business compliance practices.
"Intrusion recognizes the HIPAA compliance priorities and initiatives at Orthofix, a world-class leader in medical orthopedic devices," said Ben A. Bittle, Intrusion's Director of Product Management. "We appreciate the confidence Orthofix has placed in us and our Compliance Commander solution. We look forward to continuing to meet their HIPAA enforcement needs now and in the future."
