Business Wire, Feb 14, 2005
BELLEVUE, Wash. -- Students on the cutting edge of using X products bring specialized skill sets, fast learning curves, and end user perspective to Attachmate's development team
Attachmate Corporation, 20-year veterans of connecting users with critical enterprise applications and data, announced a partnership with Western Washington University (Bellingham, Wash.) that puts students of the Computer Science program on the development team of cutting-edge X Windows software that redefines market standards for ease-of-use. This partnership gives WWU educational licenses of the new software and arms students with highly technical on-the-job experience. Attachmate gains a diverse skill set, additional end user perspective, and cost-efficient development resources.
"We need to celebrate and nurture private/public ventures like the one between Western Washington University and Attachmate -- this is an important trend," said Kathy Wilcox, CEO of the WSA, the nation's oldest and largest technology trade association. "Research institutions are hot beds for technology innovation, turning out tomorrow's entrepreneurs, top-notch developers or product managers who later re-connect with academia in partnerships just like this one to keep the Northwest at the top of the technology pyramid."
"This is the ultimate paid internship," said Dr. David Bover, professor and chairman of computer science at Western Washington University. "The reality is that our students need experience facing business problems as part of a corporate development effort, and Attachmate has invited the students on the team to delve deeply into all aspects of product development and design. Imagine graduating and being able to say, 'I was instrumental to helping Attachmate go-to-market with a leading X solution.'"
"We've been very impressed with the advanced skill sets and steep learning curves the students have brought to the team," said Markus Nitschke, Attachmate vice president of corporate marketing. "With very little ramp-up time, the collegians are converting their expertise -- ranging from OpenGL to UI design -- into product differentiators for KEA!(R) X, our X Windows product. This is a huge win-win and we're looking forward to expanding this program."
