Linux Email Leader Scalix Announces Support for IBM eServer zSeries; Scalix Customers Can Now Choose the Security of Linux and the Safety of the Datacenter in Running Their Email System

Business Wire, Feb 15, 2005

BOSTON & SAN MATEO, Calif. -- Scalix Corporation, provider of the industry's most powerful email and calendaring platform on Linux, today announced support for IBM eServer zSeries mainframes. All Scalix's email and calendaring capabilities, including its widely hailed power webmail client and full-function Outlook support, are now available on the zSeries platform, bringing the security and scalability of a mainframe to one of today's most mission-critical applications -- calendaring and email.

Support for the zSeries was announced this week at LinuxWorld Boston in conjunction with the launch of Scalix 9.2, the company's newest version of its platform. (See press release titled "Linux Email Leader Scalix Tackles Email Administration Complexity with New Release" at www.scalix.com).

Many organizations are looking to consolidate applications and bring them into the datacenter where they can be managed in a more secure, efficient and cost-effective manner. Email is a top candidate for the datacenter, given that it has become the lifeblood of today's business communications. The IBM zSeries mainframe, known for its superior security, reliability and I/O processing abilities, is an ideal platform for email. The virtualization and dynamic resource sharing of zSeries allows customers to consolidate applications and data, while maximizing their hardware investments and reducing administrative cost and complexity.

"The combination of the zSeries, Linux and Scalix gives customers the most secure platform possible for running email," said Julie Hanna Farris, Scalix founder and chief strategy officer. "To help customers take advantage of this new platform, we've worked hard to provide a low risk migration path that's non-disruptive to end users."

In addition to email security, Scalix on the zSeries brings two important advantages over other email systems. First, Scalix offers one of the industry's most powerful browser-based email clients running on the open source Firefox browser as well as Internet Explorer. Second, Scalix brings complete interoperability with Microsoft Exchange, Outlook and Active Directory, which is often necessary for a smooth transition to Linux email. To ensure an easy transition, Scalix offers comprehensive migration tools and methodology, administrator training and best practices, directly and through its global partner network. All of this means that organizations can migrate their email to the zSeries, without email service interruption or changes to the end user's desktop environment.

"The reliability of the mainframe plus the economics of an open source messaging, email and calendaring solution enables IT organizations to reduce costs without tradeoffs in scalability or durability," said Stacey Quandt, Senior Business Analyst for the Open Source Practice at the Robert Frances Group.
