IIJ Adds Spam Filtering Features to its Consumer Internet Service IIJmio

Business Wire, Feb 23, 2005

TOKYO -- Internet Initiative Japan Inc. (IIJ, NASDAQ: IIJI), one of Japan's leading Internet access and comprehensive network solutions providers, today announced that it will add spam filtering features to IIJmio, an Internet service for consumer customers. U.S.-based MX Logic's filtering engine will provide the spam filtering features that enable customers to dispose of spam on the server without ever having to download it to their personal computer.

Spam is emailed in huge volumes to people without their consent. This has become a very serious problem in the U.S., and the problem has grown dramatically in Japan over the last year as well. Spam is also the primary modus operandi for a type of fraud called "phishing," in which spammers pretend to be financial institutions or e-commerce sites in order to elicit personal information from unsuspecting victims, thus making spam a serious social problem as well.

IIJ's corporate customer email outsourcing service and IIJ4U already provide a spam filtering feature. This feature has now been extended to IIJmio's Personal Domain Service, Safety Mail Service, and Prime Mail Service. The spam filter calculates a score for each message that indicates the probability of that message being spam (from 0% to 100%), and the customer has several options from which to choose to determine how the message is handled. The options are "Receive all messages," "IIJ determines which messages are spam and routes them to trash bin," and "Route messages with a score of N% or higher to the trash bin."

For subscribers of IIJmio Personal Domain Service, IIJmio Safety Mail Service, or IIJmio Prime Mail Service, the new spam filtering feature will be free. IIJ will continue to improve its services and give customers the most user-friendly email environment possible.
