CinemaNow and Endemol USA Make On-Demand TV a Reality; Customers Can Now Download Previous Seasons of ``Big Brother'' and Other Top Reality Programs
Business Wire, Feb 24, 2005
MARINA DEL REY, Calif. -- CinemaNow Inc., the leader in video-on-demand for broadband, today announced it has entered into an agreement with Endemol USA, Inc., a leading producer of unscripted television content, to offer more than 75 hours of reality programming for download via the CinemaNow Web site, www.cinemanow.com. The deal marks the first time that any season of the worldwide hit "Big Brother" and other successful Endemol shows will be available in their entirety, on-demand via the Internet.
"As CinemaNow's content actively expands, consumers can select from a broader selection in on-demand viewing," said Eric Stein, Director of Acquisitions for CinemaNow. "We are excited to add Endemol's successful and distinct brand of programming to our service because it will bring great value to CinemaNow customers and strengthens the category for TV on-demand."
For television content producers and distributors, such as Endemol, CinemaNow's decision to add unscripted television content to its suite of services is significant because video-on-demand for broadband gives a second life to shows and enables the material to serve as a continued stream of revenue after it exits the airwaves.
"With CinemaNow's ability to quickly and cost effectively bring video content to the masses, a broad array of content producers recognize the growing potential of broadband delivery," added Mr. Stein.
As part of the agreement with Endemol, CinemaNow customers can download individual episodes or entire season packages of Endemol series on a pay-per-view and sell-through basis or as part of CinemaNow's Premium Plus subscription. CinemaNow's unique box-set functionality enables the availability of this content which, unlike a traditional DVD set, gives customers the freedom to download an entire season of a TV show or choose any number of individual episodes at their discretion.
Season three of the hit CBS show "Big Brother," which enters its sixth season this July, will lead as the first title available on CinemaNow. In addition to "Big Brother," CinemaNow's library of reality TV shows will include "Anything For Love," the relationship series that originally aired on FOX, and UPN's "Under One Roof," a family-based reality show.
"We are delighted to work with CinemaNow, the leading video-on-demand provider, to bring our hit shows to the online platform," said Lisa Higgins, senior vice president production for Endemol USA, the shows' producer. "This not only broadens our reach, it also strengthens our relationship with viewers by giving them the opportunity to consume our programming on the platform that works best for their lifestyle."
