Plano Independent School District Announces Sponsorship of The Parent Tutor, A Personalized Tutorial Service That Facilitates Parental Involvement
Business Wire, Feb 8, 2005
PLANO, Texas -- The Plano Independent School District (Plano ISD) and the Plano ISD Council of PTAs today announced their partnership to sponsor and promote The Parent Tutor to parents in the district. The Parent Tutor is a tutorial service for parents that gives them tools and resources to help their child succeed in school and reach their full academic potential in preparation for college.
"The Plano ISD and the Plano PTA work hand-in hand to give our students the best opportunity to succeed in their education. We feel The Parent Tutor is a valuable service that provides parents the tools to help their child at home," said Dr. Doug Otto, superintendent of Plano ISD. "We know that active parental involvement in a child's education has a substantial impact on how a child will perform in school. The Parent Tutor is one way to help parents take a proactive role to help ensure their child's academic success."
The Parent Tutor was created by visionary education leader Bill Tudor who has successfully developed other products for the education market. He created The Parent Tutor in consultation with hundreds of educators, parents and education experts on what parents need to give their children an "edge" in school. "In my research and in working with education leaders, I found the overwhelming request was to give parents a tool to keep up with and support what their child was learning in school," said Mr. Tudor, president and founder of Parent Tutor Corp. "The Parent Tutor gives parents the resources and information they need to be their child's personal tutor."
The Parent Tutor, published by the Parent Tutor Corporation (www.parenttutor.com), is an electronic tutorial service delivered weekly via email to parents. Each issue is personalized to a child's grade level, and includes tutorials on the essential building block skills students need to succeed on state and national tests, as well as to prepare for college entrance exams. Parents also receive a weekly list of reading selections tailored to their child's interests and reading abilities. Additional resources include Teach & Tech -- an opportunity for parents to ask education experts questions about the use of technology or other learning issues. Subscribers will also have access to Parent Tutor's entire database of tutorials to find relevant lessons to help their child with specific skills on which they are struggling.

The Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory compiled a series of research articles titled Research You Can Use to Improve Results focused on Parent Involvement in Education. The report states that parent involvement in a child's learning is positively related to achievement and that the more intensively parents are involved; the more beneficial are the achievement effects. The report also states that there are strong indications that the most effective forms of parent involvement are those which engage parents in working directly with their children on learning activities in the home. Programs which involve parents in reading with their children, supporting their work on homework assignments, or in tutoring show particularly impressive results. The report can be found at: www.nwrel.org/scpd/sirs/3/cu6.html.
