Highlights from the January 5th Featured Expert column by Jim Oberweis includes:
So what is in store for 2005, you ask? Oberweis' advice is straightforward for the early part of the year: CAUTION! In short, Oberweis and his team believe that the high valuations currently afforded to small-cap equities present above-average risks and may lead to a correction in early 2005. This is not to say that the upward momentum cannot continue for awhile, but they believe the duration of any such rally will be short. Valuations are simply getting ahead of themselves.
Over the full year and beyond, they are more optimistic. Increases in earnings will eventually justify higher valuations. In fact, they expect solid economic growth in 2005, which will lead to a modest increase in stock prices for the year overall.
Abiomed, Inc. (NASDAQ:ABMD) is a medical products company focused on the development of products to assist or replace the pumping function of the failing heart. In the firm's latest reported second fiscal quarter ended Sept. 30, 2004, revenue jumped 95% to $10.4 million from previous year levels of approximately $5.3 million. Earnings per share for the quarter grew to $.02 vs. a loss in the same quarter of last year.
TurboChef Technologies, Inc. (AMEX:TCF) develops and markets proprietary cooking systems focusing on providing greater "speed" to chefs and food service operators than conventional ovens. In the company's latest reported third quarter revenues jumped to $30.9 million from approximately $.5 million in the corresponding year-ago period.
