OPNET Awarded Second NETWARS Contract Extension, Increasing Total Funding to Date to $9.7M; Initial 2005 Funding of $2.5M, Second of Four Annual Contract Extensions
Business Wire, Jan 24, 2005
BETHESDA, Md. -- OPNET Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: OPNT), a leading provider of management software for networks and applications, today announced that OPNET Analysis, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary, has been awarded the second of four possible contract extensions to continue to work on the U.S. Department of Defense's Network Warfare Simulation (NETWARS) program. NETWARS is a software application for analyzing defense-related network communications.
Today's announcement follows OPNET's successful delivery of software and services as prime contractor for NETWARS in 2004. In 2004, funding included the initial contract extension for $3.5M, followed by $542,428 in follow-on work. Under the second contract extension, additional software and services will be delivered in 2005 with initial funding of $2.5 million. Two additional option years remain on the contract, which the Department of Defense (DoD) evaluates annually for renewal. Since OPNET was awarded the re-competed contract in January 2003, the total funding under the contract, including this award, is $9.7M.
The NETWARS project is part of the DoD's vision for achieving information superiority by optimizing military communications in realistic warfighter scenarios. The objectives for the NETWARS software environment include simulating major theaters of war involving thousands of communications nodes, conducting communications burden analysis, contingency planning analysis, and evaluating emerging technologies in full Joint Task Force warfighting scenarios.
OPNET's CEO, Marc Cohen, stated, "OPNET is proud of its long history of delivering software and services to meet the needs of the Defense community. This year, NETWARS will be playing a key role in supporting the DOD's transition to a web services architecture. By enabling planners and architects to evaluate the performance impact of layering network-centric enterprise services (NCES) on top of the global information grid (GIG), the overall technology risk will be significantly mitigated. This translates into better performance and cost savings for the government."
