DAVETV Launches High Definition IPTV Device; Giant International's Tao to Manufacture First Wireless HD-Capable Set-Top Box
Business Wire, Jan 5, 2005
LAS VEGAS & ATLANTA -- Broadband IPTV company and content aggregator, DAVETV, today announces the launch of the Tao Digital Media Receiver. Manufactured by Giant International's Tao Consumer Electronics division, the DAVETV set-top box will deliver over 70,000 hours of original entertainment content directly to living room TVs using any existing broadband connection.
DAVETV by Tao, includes an 80 Gig hard drive good for 200 hours of programming storage. "Ours is the very first HD-capable IPTV device with built in wireless connectivity," says Ken Lipscomb, CEO of DAVETV. The Windows CE 5.0 device also features Sigma Designs' EM8620 chip set for HD playback at 720p resolution.
An acronym for Distributed Audio Video Entertainment, DAVETV's IPTV broadcast network has licensed 70,000 hours of traditional programming such as movies, music, music videos and sports, as well as new original content self-published by end users. Using secure peer-to-peer networking, content providers use a PC-based software package called the DAVE Media Center (available for free download this month at www.dave.tv) to choose from a wide variety of business and DRM rules to publish, protect and monetize their content.
In a unique IPTV content play, DAVETV's Media Center PC software also gives consumers the ability to view free content on their PCs (as well as seeing what is available for a fee) before committing to a hardware receiver purchase for playback on a television.
"DAVETV by Tao gives consumer access to content unavailable though traditional cable and satellite providers," says Cortlandt Minnich, vice president of marketing for Giant International. "With its vast library and self-publishing capability, we expect DAVETV by Tao to lead the IPTV industry with an ever expanding library of unique content."
