From Sonitrol's ''Stupid Criminal'' File: Apprehension made at Bill Smith's Appliances in Bonita Springs, FL
Business Wire, July 22, 2005
BERWYN, Pa. -- Sonitrol helps thousands of small businesses across the nation and abroad to safeguard their facilities with its comprehensive security solutions and 24/7 professional monitoring services. Fortunately for Bill Smith's Appliances in Bonita Springs, FL, the manager made the right choice to have Sonitrol Security installed in their business as they recently experienced a break-in.
In the late evening of July 16th, Sonitrol's central station manager reported that the operator-on-duty received a verified audio break-in alarm activation at 11:20 p.m. when she heard sounds of glass breaking from the front lobby of Bill Smith's Appliances store. The operator immediately notified the customer contact and local law enforcement of this break-in and continued to provide them with real-time information as the events unfolded.
Apparently, the perpetrator was a former employee. She broke the glass to gain entry into the business, but managed to cut herself in the process. Then she attempted to remove the cash register by cutting the power cord with a pair of scissors! As a result, a big electrical spark caused her to jump back and the hood from her jacket fell back to reveal her face. The indoor video captured this activity and allowed the store manager to recognize the perpetrator as his former employee.
Arriving at the scene within seven minutes, the police reviewed the evidence and later visited the area hospital to find the perpetrator receiving stitches from her head wound as a result of the broken glass. As it turns out, this same individual admitted being involved in another "smash and grab" incident two weeks ago! Needless to say, this former employee will not be getting any good references from this employer for her next job - being in jail.
Sonitrol is able to verify alarms by strategically placing small, sophisticated audio sensors in customer's businesses. Once an attempted break-in occurs, the system is activated and Sonitrol is able to listen and verify the nature of the incident as the events unfold. Sonitrol's central station operators hear the actual sounds that trigger an alarm, as well as live audio from the site. Sonitrol operators' ability to hear what is actually happening in real-time during a break-in also provides the police with additional intelligence, and investigative evidence that can be used later in court. Police typically respond quicker to verified alarms that can result in apprehending criminals, and keeping customers' losses to a minimum.
