Bushcom Signs Up 3000th Broadband Wireless Customer Using Wi-LAN Equipment: Australian Government Supports Broadband Wireless Services on the Continent

Business Wire, July 25, 2005

CALGARY, Canada & PERTH, Australia -- Wi-LAN Inc. (TSX:WIN) and Bushcom Wireless Broadband Communications PTY Ltd. today announced that Bushcom recently signed up its 3000th customer in its broadband wireless network utilizing Wi-LAN's VIP and Libra products. The network, by far the largest of its kind in Australia, is being used to provide high-speed data and voice services to residents of rural towns and villages. Wi-LAN announced the initial $6 million purchase order for this network in January 2005, and approximately half of the order has been deployed to date. The deployment is supported by HiBIS, the Higher Bandwidth Incentive Scheme of the Australian Government's Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts.

"It is very gratifying to see our huge broadband wireless network, which was still in the planning stages only six months ago, providing service to rural communities that is equivalent in quality and bandwidth as those found in the major capital centers," said Michel de Florenca, Managing Director, Bushcom. "When we first began discussing this network with Wi-LAN we knew we would need a supplier with very solid and reliable products, and an extremely dedicated and responsive support infrastructure. We have been very pleased with the networking skills of the Wi-LAN team and the performance of the equipment; Wi-LAN's products combined with their commitment to our success have been outstanding."

HiBIS has now registered 35 ISP's since the scheme was launched in April 2004. There are currently more than 34,000 customers connected to HiBIS broadband services and about 12 per cent are wireless. Bushcom is the largest wireless ISP in the system.

HiBIS is an initiative of the Australian Government providing registered Internet service providers (ISP's) with incentive payments to supply higher bandwidth services in regional, rural and remote areas of Australia at prices comparable to those available in metropolitan areas. ISP's that register with HiBIS can receive an incentive payment for each registered HiBIS service provided to an eligible customer. Providers are able to use these incentive payments to reduce the price of existing broadband services like satellite or to roll out new broadband infrastructure like ADSL or wireless local loops, where consumer demand might otherwise have been insufficient to justify such investments.

"Bushcom's entrepreneurial drive and organizational abilities, combined with the Australian Government's foresight and funding, have made this network deployment possible," said Chris Beadle, Vice President, Global Sales, Wi-LAN Inc. "There is clearly a huge appetite for wireless broadband communication infrastructure in Australia, and we look forward to continuing to work closely with Bushcom to expand their network to serve rural communities across the continent."

Wi-LAN's market-leading broadband wireless solutions, utilizing the technologies and high-quality products of the Company and its partners, provide broadband Internet access, Voice-over-IP, data network extension, wireless data backhaul, telephony backhaul, and wireless hot zones. As well, customers who deploy Wi-LAN's Libra MXTM WiMAX platform system receive guaranteed protection from Wi-LAN's Continuity Program(TM), which guarantees customers a seamless and economic transformation to WiMAX compliant networks when WiMAX Forum Certified(1) equipment becomes available, expected in early 2006.
